Who's Planning On Seeing Avatar?

I had seen posters and the occasional Internet banner ad for Avatar in the past but I never really knew what it was about. Then I saw the trailer for it when I saw 2012 and I was totally blown away.

I know I'm counting the days until Dec. 18.

Anyone else looking forward to this movie?

Well, I want to give it a chance, but the CGI from what I've seen doesn't look all that great, which is surprising for the amount of time they've spent on it. Depending on what the reaction is to it in theaters, I might see it there, but most likely, I'll see it on DVD.

When I saw the first trailer, I think on the Transformers movie, I thought it looked like it might be good, but then I saw another trailer with all the blue people all over it, and I thought it looked kind of silly. Maybe I am thinking of two separate things though... I hardly ever know what I'm talking about anymore.

Bad CGI?! If I hadn't read that the Na'vi were CGI I would have gone through the movie thinking that they were actors in makeup.

Vagabond
It looks totally lame to me, but Wampus and I have decided to see it because it's 3D, and the novelty of that never wears off. (Christmas Carol was awesome, BTW).

Who's Gargamel?

And I've seen some impressive make-up jobs that included masks and prostetic limbs. Remember Lord of the Rings?

From the Smurfs. (I'm assuming ATS has been watching South Park)

Sure, but you could tell they were real people in make-up and costumes. Here they look very CGI. If I was 13, I'd probably be all about it, but these days, I'm not sure I'll be able to get past the CGI.

I was excited, but the more I learn of the completely unoriginal story, the more I'm not interested.

Everything I've learned about storytelling is that there is no such thing as an original story. Every story ever concieved falls under 14 plot types, and the only distinguishing factor is the characters. If you have great characters your story will work.

One of the biggest draws for me when it comes to Avatar is the Na'vi culture. I'm an engineer who wants to work with high technology, but at the same time I'm a huge proponent for the drive to be more in tune with nature. Avatar's story is the classic technology vs. Natural story with the "advanced" vs "primitive" story, both favorites of mine since they're 2 sides of my own psyche.

And so what if the CGI that was used to create the Na'vi isn't photo-realistic? Makes them look a bit more alien.

Pan's Labyrinth and District 9 come to mind.

Yes, I'll be seeing it.

As for those that are complaining about the unoriginal story, I'll grant that, but sometimes, the fun is not had in the story itself, but how the story is told.

Yeah, exactly, in 3D!

James Cameron is a particular kind of action director as far as I'm concerned. Every scene in his films that doesn't involve violent conflict with aliens/robots of some kind tends to suck imo. Regarding Avatar I dislike the look of the Na'vi - some kind of Uncanny Valley reaction going on. None of this matters.

Its in 3D, it has aliens & robot(ics) in it and its in 3D.

I like James Cameron as an SF director. Terminator and Terminator 2 were both great. Abyss was quite an interesting movie.

Admittedly, outside of SF, I don't think so highly of Cameron. But this is an SF project, and I have high hopes.

Depends Upon My Mood..
My son wants to see it and I dont go to all the movies he wants to see his dad mostly takes him but this one I think I can handle.Im just not going opening weekend or even the next. What I really cant handle to be honest with going to the movies is having to get your seat 20 minutes before they even start the previews.

My son and husband get there so early sometimes they are still running credits from the last showing.

Love
