Who's Planning On Seeing Avatar?

Wow, that was an amazing movie. The visuals were beautiful, the characters were lifelike, and the story really tug at the heartstrings.

The ideas and themes also gave me a ton to think about. I won't go into any detail here since I don't want to spoil anything at this point (the movie did just come out after all), but I'll be doing a spoilerific write up in the next day or so. Stay tuned for that, I'll post a link to it in here.

And 1 final note: see it in IMAX if at all possible. It's well worth the money.

I'd be very interested to read that, thanks.

The critics I've read suggest the characters are one-dimensional and the story painfully predictable --- just as I expected.

That said, the visuals are said to be amazing and I will go see it in beautiful digital 3D.

Ooooohhhhh....the critics say so huh? Well then, I guess there's nothing else for me to say, cause the critics know everything. /snark

I stopped listening to the critics a long time ago, they're nothing but pretensious windbags who feel self important. Most of them wouldn't know a good movie if they had one smack them right in the face.

I'll respectfully disagree. Just as there are some good mechanics and bad mechanics or or good doctors or bad doctors and so on....there are some good critics and bad critics.

Also, most of the critics gave it favorable reviews. Still going to act snarky?

It was a bit like Star Wars when it first came out: outstanding special effects, enough action and interaction to prove interesting, and all the intellectual depth of a paper plate. It's almost certainly the best trite action movie you'll see all year.

Saw it about half an hour ago, my girlfriend is still balling her eyes out.

Not worth paying extra to see it in 3D though.

Well, I just saw it today.

And I must say: I've seen this story before. Many times, in fact. But, to be perfectly honest, I've never seen it done this well. With one exception, every movie I've seen with this scenario has been a childrens' film, the exception being The Last Samurai. (I've never seen Dances With Wolves, so that probably helped.) It also helps that I've always loved this scenario.

So, I have to say: I loved this movie.

Wow, I don't know what to tell you. I'm honestly not sure how anyone could make that mistake.

I agree. The CG was great, but I wouldn't mistake it for makeup. (Most of the time anyway. There were a couple of shots where the line became blurred.)

Thing about critics is that they're trained to look at movies from a critical standpoint, not whether or not the movie is enjoyable. There are several enjoyable movies that are critically terrible, and vice-versa. (Such as Mortal Kombat.)

But I wouldn't stop listening to critics, if only to remember how to make films, since that's what I want to get into.

OH, and by the way, guys, I saw it in 3D. I loved this movie, but I'm sorry: the 3D was very shallow; the only parts that I felt worked were the bugs and other small things. (At one point, a bug flew across the screen, and I felt tempted to swat it away.)

I, personally, recommend just seeing it in a regular theater without all the visual gimmicks, at least for the first time. That way, you can get a genuine impression on what you react to most: the visuals or the story.

I haven't seen it yet, but I suspect the 3D these days is more subtle. Move makers aren't trying to show off the technology - they're just adding a visual layer to the film.
