Why do some people leave religiousforums?

In my experience, people primarily leave for two reasons.

First, people realize this is a moderated forum and they can't get away with abusive behavior or preaching/proselytizing. They are used to forums that aren't moderated where they can say whatever they please without consequence.

Second, people leave because they take things personally. They take someone challenging their beliefs as a personal attack and become upset when people don't agree with what they believe.

While I'm sure there are other reasons, in my experience, these are the most common.

I've known a few religious/spiritual folks who either leave or become less active because they feel politics get too much attention, or it doesn't have enough emphasis on the conversation they were hoping for.

I'm still here but I am closer to leaving than I was in the past. The big reason is that the owners don't give a flying **** about the site as evidenced by the lack of change in anything including the critical item of email handling and unwillingness to do even the easy changes that only require a config setting.

So I signed up for reddit a while ago and spend some time there now instead of here. And a few times I've posted something on Mastodon rather than here depending on what it is.

And I refuse to have more than 5 RF browser tabs open whereas before I only needed one.

Why would you need 5 RF browser tabs?

Three treads I'm following that I would not need to with proper following notification:

Two "what's new" threads that would be the only one with the old version of RF

To me, this is often a very toxic and stressful place. I barely log in anymore because of it.
Well, and I try and say it respectfully, sometimes your stridence can be toxic and stressful for others -- I've certainly felt it. It is not always necessary to enter every discussion by climbing your little mound and exclaiming "I'm the king of the castle..."

Excuse me? See, I can't even make a post here without being insulted. Wow, RF. Seriously, screw this board. Maybe I should just permanently leave.

See? You instantly struck an attitude and came back swinging, with the usual threat of taking your ball and going home. Read some of your own posts, and see if you can't find strident attitudes from you in threads about transgenders and others.

I'm strident, too, when people hit my hot buttons (intolerance, hatred, etc.), and I've been called on it, too. And I've accepted the call, when I deserved it.

Your own tag-line says it, don't you think? "I'm not deaf, I'm just a real bad listener."

Maybe it's because I'm not happy with how I'm being treated. I'm often insulted on here and I have a lot of problems I'm dealing with offline. I get fed up very easily, but I'm still far less nasty than many of the regulars here, who are openly trolling, insulting and bullying people almost every day here (I do lurk). But people want to get on me. Hmm.

I don't know what you mean by "strident". Having a firm opinion? And I definitely don't know what you're talking about with posts about "transgenders". I'm a trans man. I'm pretty angry about the whole topic right now. With both sides. This a topic that, of course, involves me in some way.

Not at all. Firm opinions are one thing, but presenting a point of view, especially when it's controversial, in an excessively and unpleasantly forceful way is what stridence is, and it is usually unnecessary.
Er, most people here are doing that at this point in the political debates. Again, why single me out?

I think one thing people aren't mentioning enough here is the adaptation to the new server redesign. A lot of us didn't like the changes that were presented through it, especially how it gutted the new threads section. Traffic has slowed down significantly since RF was forced to update, and although myself and others have had very vocal opinions about reinstating the features that were once here, nothing has been done about it.

I haven’t left yet, but when I do it’ll be because

a) I got bored
b) The incessant screech of axes being ground has become injurious to my peace of mind.

If I return from time to time it’ll be because just occasionally, from amidst all the sneering and the caterwauling, and the relentless negativity, a genuinely novel and thought provoking exchange breaks out.

Leaving? Well of course it couldn't be because one's ego is being challenged - and one's beliefs of course - which also must be true for some.
