Why do you believe in God?

As I look at my avatar, I can see why you might have that impression. What I currently have as an avatar is just part of a larger picture, namely, one of monkeys and bears gathered to build the bridge for Rāma.

No no I was referring to your avatar name. Mangalavara.

How was he there? How do you know its GOd?

I reached out in my hour of need, and found the Great Reality deep inside, as countless others in my situation have. I was lifted up when I was down, and this miracle of spiritual healing, I ascribe to a God of my understanding, the sense of whose presence has remained with me ever sense.

Thank you so much. Please dont misunderstand me for asking you why. Have a great day.

Everyone is different, as much as their theologies, individually. Some believe because of a rational argument, some because of an emotional appeal, some because of personal experience, etc etc. This thread is to understand why as an individual, not as an institution, indoctrination or standards, although all of them would have influenced the individual, would believe in God.

As an individual, why do you believe in God?
For me it is a combination of multiple reason why I become a believer in God :)
Everything from personal experience of what happened when I was on the lowest part of my life, until the feeling of extacy and joy. And that when I called out in desperation, God did answer in the way of guidance out of my trouble.
But why Allah and the Quran? Because it was the text within the quran that was put in front of me, and it expanded toward sufi teachings.

Note: I don't have a "picture" of God, nor any clue what God is or is not

BUT I experience that when I call upon or think a lot about Sai Baba or Jesus or Muhammad or... they appear in form or in vision or in dream.

Even when I repeated SoHum mantra silently in a Portugese Catholic Church for like 6 hours, during a ceremony where all others were chanting Portugese hymns (I don't speak Portugese hence I focussed on my mantra), Jesus appeared to me

So, again I have no clue about God, but when I follow instructions of Scriptures about God, things happen, and I like it, I feel immense Peace and Joy inside.

I call it God, being the source of all, without feeling the need to know or understand all the details, also because looking outside seeing the huge Universe, I kind of get the picture... it's way beyond my infinitesimal understanding, and I can live with that

A question. When Jesus appears to you, what does he look like?

Everything we see around us, couldn't possibly have cropped up, in my opinion, out of nothing. Existence cannot appear out of Non-Existence. The effect that we see and feel (the material universe) must have a cause. And this cause, in my opinion, is the infinite, all-pervading Spirit or Consciousness, which some call God. :=)

I don't "believe in" God. I simply choose to trust in the idea that a benevolent God exists because doing so significantly improves my experience of life. To "believe in" God would imply that I think my idea of God is more than just my idea, and I have no way of determining that. And I have no need to adopt such a presumption. Faith is a process and I can trust that process because I find that it works for me. I don't have to pretend that I know something that I don't.

I too have instinctive feelings pertaining to the existence of a creator. I recall reading a book by a zoologist, Desmond Morris. The book,'Naked Ape', gives reasons for these instinctive feelings or beliefs. He reasons that homo sapiens, like other primates, have this tendency to look up to their version of the Silver Back that rules and protects the troop. (just a thought)
