Why do you love God?

Why do you love God?

I was lead to the following scripture by the Holy Spirit this evening...

Jeremiah 29:11-13
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."

After reading, I prayed and realized that there is something wrong with the way I am loving God.

I've been loving him because I want something.

I love Mother for basically the same reason I love my mom.

Though, I, too, have problems in expressing that love, though not the same. Old habits die hard, and new habits form hard. I'm not very good at keeping up practice.

You love Him because He gave to you already, and you know He is giving more as you need and are able to ask of Him. Don't feel guilty that you want good for yourself, just keep good for others as well.

Why do I love God? Because He is beautiful and because I am grateful.

He hears and answers prayers and provides for all our needs.

Here are two extracts that express some of my feelings.

"Our paradise, indeed, is our God; our highest enjoyment is in God, for we have seen Him and all beauty found in Him. This treasure is worth having, even if at the cost of one's life; and this is a jewel which should be purchased even if obtainable only by sacrificing one's entire being. O ye that are devoid, run to this spring, for it will slaken your thirst. It is the spring of life that shall save you. What am I to do, and how am I to impress this glad tidings on your mind; with what drum should I go crying through the streets that 'this is your God'. from Kishti-Nuh by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, India..

Allah is He beside whom there is no god, Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful. Allah is He beside whom there is no god, the Sovereign, the Most Holy, the Source of Peace, the Bestower of Security, the Protector, the Mighty, the Subduer, the Exalted. Holy is Allah, far above that which they associate with Him. He is the Allah, the Creator, the Maker, the Fashioner; His are the most beautiful attributes. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him. He is the Mighty the Wise. Quran ch. Al Hashar v.23-25.

I love God because everyone loving and being loved is at an advantage. Love never fails. Why should The Spirit not be comforted in the knowledge that Spirit is loved? Everything else in life is a dead end but love keeps growing. It is a good and fine occupation.

It depends on the god.

Some because they're neat. Some because they're cute. Some because they're awesome. Some because they're hot. Some because they're inspiring. Some because they're controversial. Some because they're fundaments. Some because they're beautiful.

But in all cases you could boil it down to "because they are what they are" and I see the value in all things of reality.

Wanting something from God is not bad in and of itself. It's what one wants that can be good or bad. To want God's help and grace for the selfless service (seva) of others is not a bad thing.

Why do I love God? Because He's cool, has a great sense of humor and is playful, kind, generous, easy to please and helpful. What better friend can one ask for?

Why do you love God?

I can't help it. God is everything I want it to be all the time forever. I can't imagine ever having a problem with that.

Oh, you're talking about something else aren't you...

After reading, I prayed and realized that there is something wrong with the way I am loving God.

I've been loving him because I want something.

Why is that wrong?

Do you have to?

I mean, I don't tend to use that word lightly so I often wonder if I do or maybe if it's enough?

Sometimes, all you need is some form of understanding [no matter how small] and that's it for some.

That's a decent point to raise. The word "love" works far too hard in the English language to the point that it can become trivialized. I guess for me that hasn't happened yet.

At least in my path, the alternatives are not acceptable. The alternatives are apathy or hatred. I don't find apathy towards everything in the universe or hating the entire universe to be particularly... sensible. >_>

I don't see wanting something as being the wrong approach to loving God.
What is love, if not some type of want?

Maybe you are implying that, that which you have been wanting is not truly what is best - or of God.
Some believe Luke 17:22 which says, "The kingdom (realm/experience) of God is within you."
Some also believe that we are "children of God" and are gods... "Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High." -Psalms 82:6

Within each of us is enormous potential.
The most significant potential we have is our ability to love.
"God is love" & we know as we love others, we love God (God is within others as well as ourselves).

What is love?
IMO, Love is hoping & striving for what is best, through trial & error - active faith.
If you are trying to understand what you experience & learn... and apply your understanding to the best of your imperfect human ability to do what is best for yourself as well as others, then you are loving God.

Seconded (thirded?). I used it a bit more trivially myself. I mean, I personally don't love god in the way I love my family and friends or anything like that. More in the way I love Anthony Hopkins. I'm I huge fan of his work.

A valid point. Its not going anywhere after all. :)

No I didn't mean that.

Matthew 22:36-38
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment."

Hey Noya... well the spirit of God has me reading like 4 chapters (the Jewish names, not just all of Genesis, but the Hebrew names of the Jewish books), like 1,000 pages of Scripture when I go to read Scripture... Not just one line of like Jeremiah 29:11-13.. no, more like Genesis 21-23 Then the next book Isiah 16:7-8, then Genesis 24-28, for example, from the top of my head, just example, not saying I'm accurate.. But that's just an idea model there of how the Torah works.

But it is wonderful God is telling you to read the Bible in a part that happens to help you in your life... and are you sure you didn't use an index? I do indexes from time to time... That was before I got down to reading the entire Torah from front to back. Minus the parts of explains that aren't really scripture, just you know... But if you read the bible from beginning to end, it will help you in ways that you can't even imagine... I'm not promoting Jesus parts though. Because to Muslims, the entire New Testament is completely wrong.

And I love God because... Because God lets me breathe and You, Noya can help me spiritually and I can help you, Noya spiritually, because we are both God's creations.

I love God because He helps me through things, just like I'm sure God helps you with things.

I love God because if I don't, I could be tortured in the afterlife.

I love God because he lets me see beauty in my daily life and I highly appreciate it and I recommend others see the beauty that God gave to the World too.

I love God because He is no doubt Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.

I love God because of many other things, that I can't think because I am just one real human being... there is many reasons to love God, but I love God so much, no doubt about that.

....insted of God.
One can get true love only by grace of God.

I can only tell one of the major syptom which one finds in true love, and that is.. helplessness.

How ?

Have you ever seen somebody saying, or somewhere written "I am loving" ? it's always said as "I am in love" or " I am fallen in love"

Why it is always written.. fallen in love, insted of i am loving ?
Because in true love one finds him/herself as fallen, One finds that now he/she is helpless for doing it, One finds that love is grater than me that's why he/she is helpless for doing it.

"Agape" is unconditional and voluntary love. (Wiki Agape)

This is a difficult question :0 The truth is, I don't know.
Shiva and Shakti are in everything. Why do I love this tree ? he gives it's fruits to everyone. Why do I love this flower ? she is very beautiful. Why do I love my friend ? We understand each other, and have so much good moments. Why do I love my cat ? He accept me for what I am and is faithful and concerned. Why do I love sleeping ? Hugging ? Crying ? Smiling to a complete stranger ? The scent of flowers ? This guy here ?

Too much reasons. I love Mahadev for all of this in fact. He is everywhere. His shrine is as well in the tree, in the flower, in my friend, in my own heart. Mahadev does not punish me for what I am, and He never leave me alone. He is always here. Everywhere. All I have to do to realize it is to just sit, just enjoy, or sing his name, as He is in His name too, and in every name. That's His beauty

For me He is a friend, a teacher, a husband, a king, a beggar, and I love Him with all those kinds of love. I love Him as He love me
