Why does anyone care about watching sports?

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
I always watch quite a bit of the Olympics. Of course not every event, but many of them. I think the Olympics are especially fascinating.

I don't really get into any other sports watching other than football (American). I haven't really watched the college football. It seems like too much to try and follow. I'm not a basket ball person either. I've gone to a few B-ball, football and baseball games before but I don't see the point in spending money on a consistent basis to go and watch. It seems like too much of a hassle. Here's a question.....does anyone here watch the Summer and/or Winter Olympics? I try to watch and keep up with some events....but even with that I'm not totally into every sport presented.
I don't really watch the Olympics, but I sometimes watch a few highlight clips online, or there have been times where I'm at a friend's house and we watch a little.

I can see why people like it. Watching someone do a huge number of flips on a snowboard or something is pretty awesome. I can understand why people enjoy watching phenomenal amounts of physical skill, and to a certain extent I find it interesting. It's very impressive.

When it comes to sports, the only thing I don't really understand is the concept of being a fan of a specific team (with changing coaches, players, etc.).

I can understand watching games as a source of entertainment, but I never understood why people invest so much emotion and ego into something they have no part in and where the outcome is ultimately trivial and meaningless.

Trivial and meaningless coming from a guy with a ronald mcdonald with a crown of thorns lol watching sports is investing time. Cheering for your favorite team is exhausting and as you have heard it here, the thrill of last second scoring is what makes sports, sports.

Lol, had to go there........Let's see better QB Montana or Aikman? NFL says Montana. Better wide receiver Irvin or Rice? Nuff said. Better S, Woodson or Lott? Ahem.
And we still haven't LOST a Superbowl appearance.

Fans pay the money to watch. Without the fans, the teams and players don't exist. And if your team really sucks, it's hard to be a true fan.
Why do people have favorite actors, musicians or entertainers?

I enjoy Morgan Freeman as an actor. He has a set of qualities that he generally carries with him between movies. I wouldn't particularly say I am a Morgan Freeman fan, nor do I debate his merits against other people in a debate about good actors.

But for a similar reason, I can understand people enjoying certain star athletes. They are the pinnacle of their profession.

A team, on the other hand, changes over time. Players come and go, coaches come and go, and sometimes even owners come and go. It's a business. Rather than being a lifelong fan of Morgan Freeman, it would be like being a lifelong fan of a production company like, say, Lion's Gate, even as employee turnover occurs.

There are times when I think, perhaps being a fan of team would make more sense. For instance, there's that coach Joe Paterno, who has been coach of his team for like 50 years or something, and he has all sorts of records. If someone were a fan of him and his work, and is a fan of the sport in general, I think it would make sense to follow his accomplishments and cheer for his football team.

Basically, what it comes down to is that for some reason, the level of invested emotion and excitement in a sports team is unrivaled compared to most other types of passive hobbies.

If I had an all star football team yeah montana would be my starter and troy my secondary but irvin is about equal to rice unless you looking at records

I admire acts of extreme athleticism.

For instance, this slam dunk was pretty awesome:
Video: Shannon Brown switches hands on the dunk, Kobe is impressed - Ball Don't Lie - NBA Blog - Yahoo! Sports

And someone sent me a private message the other day with a really cool soccer/football goal.

I wouldn't watch a few hours of game time to see those, though. If someone sends me a highlight, I'll be impressed.

Apparently you don't understand. I am not from San Francisco. I am not from Dallas. I am not from New York. I am from New Orleans. I am emotionally invested in the Saints and what they've accomplished over the past five years. I was a Saints fan when they were the Aints, and I'm a Saints fan now, and will probably be a Saints fan when I am 98 years old and about to be a saint myself.

My gosh, my dog's name is even WhoDat! I've got it bad.

WhoDat - his usual pose while the Saints are playing, until I start yelling - then he goes and hides behind the recliner.

Heck, my husband and I even named our company after the Saints team!

You're high!!!!! You could take almost anyone off the field from the 9ers except the QB and Rice would still be the biggest threat even if double covered.
Irvin needed Emmett Smith to free up the secondary. Again, you're high!:D Don't make me pull out stats sheets!!!
