Huh?

It was a figure of speech. It was meant to say that someone who is a religious observant of Judaism and who is a movie director (this is hypothetical scenario) may not portray the likeness of their prophet via an actor in a movie. Similarly, a a person who is an observant Muslim may not portray the likeness of Muhammad via an actor.

But a part of the movie industry in the United States respects other cultures, period. This is why we don't make large movies of figures that can cause global controversies. Christians can cross those boundaries of portraying religious figures but observant Jews and Muslims don't.

Is it historically accurate to portray Jesus as Jim Cavizel or Moses as Christian Bale? I think when you "white wash" Biblical prophets to fit some ethnic narrative you're taking away the core message of their significance because now you are trying to relate that specific prophet to a specific demographic in the audience.

I am under no obligations whatsoever that I "have" to respect ideas or religions or ideologies. Or even people, for that matter.

Respect is something that is earned, not granted by default.

No. The reason is not "respect". The reason is money and security.
There are countless upon countless examples of movies, series, etc, where people or even entire cultures or ethnicities are ridiculed or just factually depicted. When "respect" becomes selective like that, it usually means that other factors are at play.

Christians can cross those boundaries of portraying religious figures but observant Jews and Muslims don't.

Then Jews and Muslims can decide for themselves that they won't cross whatever arbitrary boundaries are defined by whomever. Why should the arbitrary religious boundaries of Jews or Muslims apply to me, who's neither a jew nor a muslim?

Is Jesus in the Passion historically accurate?
How about Jesus in South Park?
Or Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar?
What harm is caused by any of these three being made or watched?

I am sure that was not the intent, but the 1976 movie ends up showing how casually truth is distorted in order to protect dogmatism and the perception of Muhammad as an ineffable being as opposed to a true human.

Why not do it?

Any author who does not portray Mohammad favorably will be looking at negative reactions from his Muslim followers. If one wants to know if a prophet is good or false, look at their fruits (Matthew 7:15-20). Are Muslim's a religion of peace, as they state, or a religion of war and blood, as their historic actions portray?
