Why Hell?

eXiled

I like logic.
To scare people into believing that if you don't follow their ways, then your soul is damned forever. Seems kind of extreme to me, but to each their own.

I think they used it to scare people into believing. Either that or it is that perverse human nature to want you enemies to be tormented.

Hmm, maybe the same reason you're trying to "save" all the religious folk from their beliefs?

I fail to see the connection between challenging people to think about their beliefs and threatening someone with eternal damnation if they fail to live up to a set standard.

hell isn't punishment carry out by God. God is more merciful than to torture his creatures, hell is something else

In what way can you compare hell to justice? maybe the justice systems of a long time ago, but not today.
I didn't equate hell with justice, I said that a longing for justice is probably what led to the idea of hell.

We hate seeing bad people get away with it. We want to believe that everyone gets what they deserve in the end. If that doesn't happen in the here and now, then shouldn't God mete out punishment when it's deserved? That's the line of thinking that I think led to the idea of hell.

Penguino, doesn't Hinduism believe in a sort of temporary hell, or am I misremembering?

It depends, our very orthodox scriptures might mention something, but Hinduism evolves and comes out with new thinking, right now, i believe there is no hell, hell and heaven is on earth.
