scientism activists oppose things that I know to be true via mystical / paranormal experience.

Evidence of another world is needed before belief of other worlds is justified.

Well, yeah. But we have to be mindful of subconscious biases and hidden philosophical premises and social pressures that run in our minds as we consider the evidence. I think scientism is blinding people to evidence that would change their worldview.

And the evidence is only half the story. It has to be supplemented by individual efforts to awaken to the "spirit world" or, in Jungian terms, the "collective unconscious". It's the equivalent to swallowing the proverbial red pill. It's the shamanic crack-up Neo went through, metaphorically speaking. Because there really is no substitute for having your own actual first-hand veridical psychic experiences. When you awaken to the spirit world, verifiable psychic experiences are what you get.

We understand quite a bit about the subconscious because of science and medicine.

"biases and hidden philosophical premises and social pressures that run in our minds as we consider the evidence."

evidence for what?

"scientism" is a extremly archaic term. Just use science.

Is science blinding people from their worldview when they get weather reports from satellites and doppler radar? How many lives has science saved?

"Jung believed in astrology, spiritualism, telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance and ESP. In addition to believing in a number of occult and paranormal notions, Jung contributed two new ones: synchronicity and the collective unconscious.

synchronicity - The Skeptic's Dictionary - Skepdic.com

We know now that astrology is meaningless. The armed forces are starting to put together devices that use electronic "telepathy", using science.

"verifiable psychic experiences"

Name one?

Poeple can also have what they think are "psychic experiences" because of brain disorders. We know this from science.

Science kinda sucks but I'm amused by it sometimes. It's an age of novelty that's for sure.

But we don't need science in order to explore the cosmos or the deep sea or to be healthy.

The fault can't be reduced to an individual, just to a sleepy sort of herd-mentality groupthink.

"But we don't need science in order to explore the cosmos or the deep sea or to be healthy."

LOL, wow

Yeah microscopes and telescopes have done nothing to advance humans understanding of the cosmos and human health.

You think you could go down 7 miles under the ocean with out a speicialize submarine?

what do you think of the fact we have now taken pictures of the afterglow of the big bang in microwave light, before any stars or galaxies existed.

What do you think about

"Many scientific theories are so well-established that no new evidence is likely to alter them substantially. For example, no new evidence will demonstrate that the Earth does not orbit around the sun (heliocentric theory), or that living things are not made of cells (cell theory), that matter is not composed of atoms, or that the surface of the Earth is not divided into solid plates that have moved over geological timescales (the theory of plate tectonics). Like these other foundational scientific theories, the theory of evolution is supported by so many observations and confirming experiments that scientists are confident that the basic components of the theory will not be overturned by new evidence. However, like all scientific theories, the theory of evolution is subject to continuing refinement as new areas of science emerge or as new technologies enable observations and experiments that were not possible previously."

"...and also as a metaphorical illustration of either the scientific or the mystical quests for knowledge."

You DO understand I was using it as a mystical metaphor, don't you good sir Shawn?

The less common term for mystical is mysterious and there is nothing that mysterious really per se about the picture. So a "metaphor" for what? The mysterious?

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed."
