Why is god identified as a "he"???

It's not fair really, half the world is female so that sort of means there is a male god who made females for male entertainment, i think we need to get rid of the he and start saying "it" For no-one knows the gender of god, no mattter what any scripture says.:shout *IT*

"It" is my preferred pronoun for God, but I don't always use it because some people find it demeaning...it's pretty ironic.

Most Gods are identified as male because that is the way they are described in Scripture. The term "Him" is used often.

To me, God is both Mother and Father. It took two bring me in this world - my mother and my father. Often when I'm referring to God, I say "He/She". To me, God doesn't have any gender but has male qualities like a Father and female qualities like a Mother. :)

That is exatly right! God needs a male and female side to be identified as "god". Shivji has his common male side, BUT he also has a she side, shakti.

Perhaps the nomadic warriors that came and killed the farmers and took their land (and then became the farmers) subsumed the farmers' mythologies and their moon and earth goddess, fertility and agricultural symbols, under the warriors' own vengeful warrior-God tribal mythologies.

In other words, perhaps the "scriptures" of the dominant religions of our day were written by warrior cultures who honor the "male" power of conquest as their deity, more than they do the "female" power of life giving, and maybe that is the reason for the dominant use of male pronouns to refer to "God." All these traditions can be seen to reveal the goddess-agricultural roots of the subsumed mythologies they conquered though.

ok, in sparta women had a HUGE power, they controlled greece at one time, female deities, romans had them too, so did hinduism, i still dont see how it prevailed in the end.

Actually, in the Old Testament God is spoken of alternately as male and female, when you go back to the original translation. S/he is described as "a mother hen" and in another place as "nursing" His/Her chosen people. I don't have citations on me but it should be easily Google-able.

I know, you get all these "preachers" who promote equality between sexes, but he/she goes and says he! Honestly.

It's a peculiarity of language. In Russian ships are "he's" in most languages a ship is always a "she".

Try saying always "he or she" rather than just "he" or typing "he or she" instead of "he". Think of the wasted paper by turning a two space pronoun into a nine space pronoun. "(S)he" is even clumsier to type. "Heeshee" is a homonym for Heshi (a Native American form of bead art), "Heesh" is still five spaces where two will do.

Speech, verbal or written, should be economical. that's a virtue in anyone's book.

Scott

The female deities in both Roman and Hindu mythology operate subordinate to the male forms.

This is Shiva who threw himself in front of Kali to calm down her raw energy and thus create a balance in creation.
