Why Men?

Why is it, that in religion, men have generally been held in high regard to women?

Now, i know that in some beliefs or religions women and men have been regarded equal, but in general, in all religions men have been in more than one instance been held in higher regard?

What is it that women did, or not do that made them inferior to men?

Is there a sign of that changing?

Of course i do not actually think men are superior, in case it sounded like that.

Thanks in advance :)

Because a lot of religions were founded during primitive times and so retain primitive values.

You can erase the word religion in that sentence.

I think men has generally been held in higher regards in society simply because of a characteristic that most mammalian species share, males are physically stronger:

I don't think that women have done anything wrong to make them seem inferior to men, I think it's more that by nature, men are more dominant. They like to conquer and to see themselves as better than anyone or anything else. It's the testosterone levels.

I don't think you're doomed - unless men can find a satisfactory way of reproducing the species (or an exclusively male version of it) without you. But you did submit to bondage, and so the hope of women in this world being free of patriarchy and misogyny is unrealistic, short or long-term.

In some ways, Conor, what choice did women have? It's not like we just handed our power over so willingly and lovingly. We were raped, beaten, sexually mutilated, or murdered if we didn't submit. Such is the ways of patriarchy when those in power demand for the status quo.

Each and every step feminism takes towards supposed egalitarianism between the sexes only subliminates further men's subconscious negative thoughts and feelings toward women. You see this everywhere, in Christian fundamentalism, in historical revisionism, in all the little men-only cliques and cabals that rule in secret behind the scenes, and in the upper echelons of the professional disciplines.

I personally am quite idealistic about women, which allows me to feel very positive about them 99% of the time, but I believe I am (and others like me are) the exception to the rule. I could be wrong, but that's what I think...

That's what makes me curious. I wonder why you think so cynically about men. My battle is not with men. It's with patriarchy. And when one gender is being politically and socially oppressed, we BOTH lose. Personally, I find more men who agree with that notion than what you present here.

I would have as many qualms about matriarchy as I do with the current system in place.

Anyway, it is not a situation without some light. The best of men and women can love each other for reasons unrelated to sex, and so as long as this continues there is hope. :)

I agree. But ya know, sex is pretty darn good, too. Kissy-kissy.

Most men, by nature, are taught to be more aggressive. They may even be born to be more aggressive. I know by experience that the more aggressive one is the more attention he/she gets.
That may be a reason men are held in higher regard. Of course, I am just guessing.

Charity, while much of the Bible is subject to various interpretations, I'm not quite sure how you can interpret these verses differently:

1 Tim 2:11-15 ---- 11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

1 Cor 14:33b-36--- As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Eph 5: 22-24 ---- 22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

1 Cor 11:3-10 ---- 3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. 6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head.

Yes. But the past is done, let it be damned.

Read your own first paragraph quoted above; that's why I'm cynical. But I take your point about seperating the ideology (patriarchy) from the sex (men).

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that men are stronger, thus putting them in a better position to take charge, and making survival alittle easier back when you needed strong people to survive. I think that some day (not any time soon though, as more and more machines replace the need for stronger people, men and women will be viewed as equals.

Actually among many Native peoples this is why men only ruled themselves.
While the men were gone (hunting, warring) the women ran the villages, they didn't give up power when the men came back.
Among themselves the Men had to look in charge, behind closed doors the women were in charge.
If the guys knew it or not.

Hey Pumpkin, sweetie......The world doesn't follow it that's why there are so many different religions.....:D Surely there's one that know's how important women are.

Ya there were but they got massacred.:sorry1:

The last one in the americas were the Iriquois. They had a system of government which demanded they could not go to war until the women voted, since they were the ones who brought in life, they had to vote to take it away.

...perhaps I should have said, the last women dominated societies in the americas were wiped out, though the people were not completely exterminated, despite attempts to do so. Hows that?

Still sounds like First Nations culture is gone... it isn't.
Get rid of the wiped out... we're still here. ;)
And Native societies weren't women dominated... they were egalitarian, with women having a more equal role in governance.
