Why so many threads on homosexuality?

There's like four long threads going on homosexuality. I wonder why this is such a hot topic.

I mean, I guess its like this. There's a lot of things which could be construed as a sin in the Bible. Murder obviously is. Lying is breaking a commandment. But people lie all the time. You don't see lying getting as much recognition and condemnation as homosexuality. Probably cause everyone does it.

Kind of my belief is we all have choices to make and have to decide for ourselves what to choose to do. If someone is homosexual, and there are some arguments for it being biological, why is it such a concern to others? To me, let people get married, have medical benefits like everyone else. Then if a God decides they have sinned, then its up to God. I don't think this should be for us to judge others on. Plus even in scriptures Jesus teaches not to judge. So why is this such a big sin to people, in comparison to others?

So far as I can see, homosexuality is especially controversial mainly for historical and cultural reasons. There have been cultures in which it was not controversial at all.

Very true. Greeks and Romans did not condemn it. To me it seems that people sometimes use their religion to justify hate of homosexuals. IMO.

Oh it gets better.

Then the people who were done wrong take it upon themselves to get a very broad brush and paint many people who support them in a bad light condemning all the religious folks.

People are obsessed with the lives of others and what others do with their lives. They also believe they have all the answers. This is the reason I can come up with. Plus people are obsessed with anything relating to sex, even though homosexuality is not about sex, its about attraction physically and romantically.

In another thread, a Christian agreed with me that the main reason why homosexuality is such a popular topic in the U.S. is because of conservative Christian political opposition to it. I also said that another catalyst was the removal of homosexuality from the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) of the American Psychiatric Association. Critics claimed that the removal was because of politics, not science, but they failed to realize that there was not sufficient scientific evidence to put homosexuality in the DSM in the first place. There were some demonstrations by gay people, but surely the American Psychiatric Association would not have removed homosexuality from the DSM solely because of that. If they had done that, they would have been willing to claim that homosexuality is not a mental illness even though they believed that it was. In fact, a good deal of science was discussed.
Critics claim that the science was not valid, but science was discussed. What science was discussed when homosexuality was originally put in the DSM? In 1973, you did not hear opponents of homosexuality talking about that.

Also, as some people have noted, there is still a ways to go since it is still legal in about 39 states to discriminate against people in many ways solely because of their sexual orientation, including denying them the right to get married. No Bible Belt state allows same-sex marriage, and only about six states allow civil unions.

When black people, women, and native American Indians were fighting for their rights, some people wondered why so many people were talking about rights for those groups of people. It was because for many people, equal rights is a big deal.

To be honest, same sex marriage isnt the top concern when it comes to the LGBT community. It is discrimination in general, and safety when it comes to people who oppose homosexuality. How people justify beating homosexuals is beyond me...do they think they can beat the gay out of them?

Well I don't want to condemn anyone. That is not my intent. I'm just trying to understand why people use their religion to bash a people? I mean, there's so many types of 'sins' a person can do. And everyone does to a degree. No one is perfect. People lie, cheat on taxes, steal office supplies. And I know this topic is big right now because gay people want to be able to get married and get healthcare benefits. But what is the harm in giving them rights under laws?

Christians argue God might get mad at us if we allow same sex marriage. To myself, its ludacris because to me, in this country, all men (and women) are created equal, and should have rights. I just do not see the benefit in denying the ability to be legally married in this country, in how this could harm other people. What harm would it really do?

I think it is like anything, if someone wants to bash people they will find any reason to justify it. Some people cling onto religious law in order to justify their actions, it is not just religious people that do this though. People find ways of justifying things like this. Not just christians.

Well with Christians this stems from Judaic law, and for that matter my logic is, lots of Christians eat pork. Why do they not look to ban pork from society, per the Jewish law? And also if someone cheats on their wife, I don't see Christians trying to make this illegal and some punishable offense. Then Jesus said people should not get a divorce except in cases of adultrey, but look at the rate of divorce in this country. I don't see them trying to stop divorce.

Years ago, the Broadway Baptist church in Texas was a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. They were thrown out of the convention because they allowed some openly gay people to become church members. As one of the pastors of the Broadway Baptist church explained, although they believe that homosexuality is a sin, it is not a defining issue.

Your preaching to the choir. I support GLBT issues.

They wouldnt get much of a reaction for trying to ban pork. Also pork has nothing to do with sex...unless you practice beastility before you eat the pork or something. People cheating has, in a way, been accepted for ages. Same with divorce. Plus they dont think cheating or divorce is icky or an abomination. Homosexuality is tolerated but not widely accepted if that makes sense?
