Why so unpleasant?

Misty

Quite a number of fundamentalist Christians seem to be highly unpleasant, not all of course. By fundamentalist I mean those who think only the so called 'saved' go to heaven, the rest of us to hell. I have come across quite a number of times on forums of this nature, the sentiment expressed by fundies that they will enjoy watching the 'unsaved' burning in the proverbial lake of fire. If there is a life after death in which Jesus features, I wonder if they might be in for a nasty shock if they discover Jesus doesn't want them for his buddies?

Us vs. Them mentaility sadly works very well. How do you think normal Germans were ok with tortuting Jews?

From what I remember from the single psycology class I took (was not an in-depth one, by the way), a us-vs-them mentality can be a way to keep the bounds within the group stronger.

I remember this forum I once visited that was crawling with fundamentalists. First it was a bit amusing reading their posts, but when they started to talk about how if God said it was ok then it was nothing wrong about them raping children then I had enough and decided to never visit that site again. It sickened me.

I wouldn't blame the fundie Xtians. Balkanization of groups can do that to anyone. We notice it more when someone aims their scorn directly at us.
I get it from: the UFO crowd, ultra-patriots & lefties...mainly lefties though, some of whom are every bit as dead certain of their inerrant truth as
the faithful fundies, & truly offended that anyone would be so bigoted/pathetic/evil/stupid/uncaring/greedy/hateful at to hold contrary views.
Certainty is the mind killer. Being right is an illusion.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

Just to point out something - this works both ways. In other words, the fundamentalists probably think that those who oppose their views are unpleasant as well.

I see unpleasant, sarcastic, intolerant rhetoric from people from all camps and belief systems here on this forum. Unfortunately, unpleasantness is not limited to those with fundamentalist beliefs.

True, but in the case of fundamentalists they think their dogma makes them a cut above the 'unsaved' heathens!

Alas, some of us heathens think we're a cut above the fundies...& just can't keep that trap shut about it.

True dat - and it's just as tiresome as fundamentalists spouting fire and brimstone rhetoric. Present company excluded of course.

Misty, I wonder if it's occurred to you that your obvious disdain and dislike for fundamentalists is probably just as offensive to them as their position is to you? I'm being honest about that question - have you ever considered that scenario?

I do hope so having had my childhood spoilt by what I consider an evil dogma!

Sure, but do you know many non-fundamentalists that have said they would be happy to have fundamentalists be tortured forever?

Anyone in any religion can be highly unpleasant.

I agree, but Christians who tell others they will burn in hell, especially if they are children or vulnerable in some other way, deserve all the opprobrium going, imo.

Is it really a case of fundamentalists being 'happy' that non believers will be tortured in a fiery Hell for eternity?

I have never heard one say that.

And you probably won't, but the feeling is there, sometimes just barely disguised. There are definitely people who take pride on being the ones with the correct, "non-damned" faith. That is why Left Behind makes any commercial success at all. It would tank big time if there weren't people with that obnoxious mentality.

I see you are from the UK like me, look on the BBC Christian message board, there are at least a couple of regular posters there who come out with that from time to time. I gave up posting there because it sickened me so much!

I've never let it get to me when people have told me I will go to Hell, their opinion won't change me. But, I agree that for children to hear that is too much. But, I also know people who grew up in a very fundamental household, and they soon learnt to think for themselves despite that.

Misty, we can all get along in this forum. I believe we should focus on our common interests and not our differences.

I'm sorry to hear about your childhood. I just wish you would not take folks on this forum to the whipping shed about this.

Your not going to turn fundies into Atheists no more than I am going to convert you to my way of thinking. It is so wrong on so many levels.

That is not what RF's mission statement is about.

Let's find something in common, what kind of music do you like?

I am fortunate I leant to think for myself after my fundamentalist childhood, but it has still left me with mental scars that remain with me to this day!

Certainty is the mind killer. Being right is an illusion.

Leaving aside the last sentense, I want to say that certainty may be a menace for critical thinking, but it sure has social uses. People with certainty are more appealing and have a far better chance of breeding and even of being listened to.

An unfortunate fact of social psychology, for sure. But a real one.
