Why Would He Do This?

So, I go out walking a lot to town and back. Every single time this guy in this car passes by, he yells 'OY!' at me really loudly for no reason. Always at me, no-one else. I do not know this person but I want to smash his headlights. Why would he do this? It is really infuriating. Why can't he just leave me alone?

Be comforted by the fact that his internalized self-loathing will likely result in a long, downward-spiral of misery in his life. He's basically crying out for help, but doesn't even know it. Of course, the next time you see his car, you can always chuck a rock through the window and hit him in the head to speed the process along.

Legal Note: I'm not actually advocating throwing a rock at someone. Morons.

Hard to tell for sure, but the first guess would be that he gets a thrill from upsetting you.

Most likely simply because he can get a reaction from you that way and at some level he fears/feels that he would not get your attention by more proper channels.

He is behind a driving whell, feeling powerful and protected. Sometimes that is enough to make people behave in inappropriate ways.

Unfortunately that is all too relatable.

I have little to offer in the way of advice, but it may be helpful to remind yourself that you do not owe him attention in any way, and that he is likely not in full awareness of his actions and their consequences.

Also, try not to appear vulnerable to him if you can help it.

Usually he isn't actually driving; someone else is.

Here's what I found Wilkapedia

1950s found that whether it was being used to call attention or as a challenge depended on its tone and abruptness. (How is he saying it)

A poll of non-English speakers by the British Council in 2004 found that "oi" was considered the 61st most beautiful word in the English language. (Maybe he's not English)

He's English and oy is a word to grab someone's attention. My mom used it on me when she wanted my attention when I had done something wrong, as did my step-father. It has the ring of 'Hey! What do you think you're doing?'

But what is the point? It's not exactly very rational, just annoying.

Human behavior isn't very rational. Maybe you trigger some past life memory in him.

Are you wearing your burka when this happens? If not, it's probably your fault.

Then it is possible that he wants to show off his "dare" to his friend.

Immature guys sometimes do that.

It should go without saying, but just in case, let me say that a desire to be noticed by you (presumably because they find you attractive) probably plays a role in that behavior.

Come to think of it, the situation reminds me of people whistling to unknown people who happen to pass through the street.
