OSX and Linux are POSIX compliant, which means they are the same at the command-line level. The big difference is that all POSIX systems have similar graphics except OSX.

That explains why I see them as similar, the command-line

Thanks

It's the power possibilities that are so tasty. But we do have to sweat sometimes

Blimey!...... RF is full of IT nerds! :p

I don't know nuthin' about these bloody things, even now.
For internet use I have this Windows 7 notebook and it has absolutely nothing in it at all. No personal data. No programs.... nuthin....

Every few months it goes wonky, so I connect up the CD drive, insert the recovery disc, completely restore and wipe the entire system and reconnect my dongle. Back online in about thirty minutes.

Oh, and after system recovery I always uninstall every friggin' program possible because I only need to visit forums. Sure, every few months some bug attacks it, so..... recovery disc!!!! :p

Who knows your problem might be caused by a small creature with 4 legs, a tail, fur, and a finicky eating pattern

I don't have any problems.
A stripped down windows 7 system starts quickly, can't decide to update itself, can't insidiously send anything anywhere, etc etc.
The only problem I get is if I am researching pictures of old sailing vessels (my hobby) and enter something like 'model whatever' and the next thing I knew there's a page of pictures of very naughty people doing extremely odd things together, with a 'live' screen in a corner showing some voluminous female who says she's only 2 miles away and very lonely.......... unplug, connect cd drive, enter recovery disc, turn off, turn on +4..... recovery!!!!!! :p
.......... and that's not very often.

So it's like based one something that is based on something else? Smart move by Apple.
It's an old computer truism that reinventing wheels is a bad idea because there are enough wheels in the world. This idea is of course contested by others but it's true enough time to make it into jokes like this one

Meh, I found a hack on majorgeeks that keeps 7 from doing any 10 related updates. Now I just get 7 updates and not a peep about 10

Linux is great for virtual machines, but I've never gotten it to install on my old XP laptops where it might have actually been useful. They're still chugging along on XP

Yep those are useful, sadly Microsoft doesn't care enough about their customers to give them that option.

Have you tried Puppy Linux? I haven't tried it, but it's made for use with older computers.

I was talking to an IT professional the other day and he reckoned that the only versions of Windows worth having were XP, 7, and 10.

As for replacing XP on small computers, the usual choice is AntiX: that will just about run in 128 MB! Puppy needs at least 512 MB, as it doesn't install: it copies itself into the memory and runs from there: portable and secure.

Any XP PC should be able to run any lightweight linux distro, but there's something about these dell laptops of mine that prevents install. Forget why atm, but it was very frustrating.

For a while now I've been running bash for Linux on Windows 10. It's pretty awesome!
