Wokeness is a problem and we all know it

“Wokeness is a problem,” he told me, “and we all know it.” According to Carville, Democrats are in power for now, but they also only narrowly defeated Donald Trump, “a world-historical buffoon,” and they lost congressional seats and failed to pick up state legislatures. The reason is simple: They’ve got a “messaging problem.”

I'm typically not a fan of Vox, but this is a good interview that brings home some salient points on the current state of Democratic politics and where it should move towards the future.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Democrats need to lay off of people. It's they who are causing all the pushback like some arrogant and pushy evangelist forcing a certain view and particular way on those who don't ascribe to their world view and are getting notably sick on continually being told on how they should act, say, and do.

I see it as an intolerance under the guise of tolerance.

As someone was apt to do. It is politics after all.
I don't care for the Democratic Party, but I do care for the way elites like this guy continue to frame anti-racism and anti-sexism.

These people act like as if their words weren't signals for their political followers to behave likewise, and in ways that have real and material effects on factually existing people, because they seem to only care about their personal convenience and the reactions of people who dwell in their social bubbles.

The consequence of this lifestyle, so hermetically sealed inside their social bubble, is their personal conveniences are taken to be equivalent to crimes against humanity, whereas they only ever understand antiracist and antisexist talking points as fashion statements and cutesy decorations, instead of concrete policy statements intended to impact real people's lives.

Leftist identity politics is just another Manichean ideology of good and evil. The 'white male' experience is one of universal privilege while the non-white, non-male experience is one of universal oppression. Never mind the complexities of the individual circumstance. Everything can be boiled down to a monolithic experience of group identity.

That article sure makes James Carville seem out of touch.

So Democrats having high ethical and moral standards is a problem in a political climate when the conservatives have been sliding towards lower ethical and moral standards. The gulf is too broad to attract the moderates who might be struggling with the emotional attraction to unethical belief versus reasoned ethical ideals. If America was mostly Buddhist monks there would be Democrats in most every political position.

It's a good thing Leftists are only in Venezuela, China, and Cuba, and probably in the Kremlin. So thanks for leaving the USA out of it.

I never quite get the point of view that Dems need to 'lay off people' whilst it seems less remarked on when the Conservatives use some pretty interesting language and even direct slander with some impunity.

Wokeness, meaning awareness of social problems such as racism, is not a problem. What is a problem is that the word has been weaponised by the rightwing, trying to make the word (and hence what it stands for) a pejorative term.

Which is kinda a key point of the article, no?

That is so missing the point of intersectionality that it's almost a self-parody.

Nobody on 'the left' says that 'white' or 'male' is a monolithic experience. But that each individual can have varying interconnected layers of privilege and advantage. White fragility makes it so people can't even accept that they benefit from a system which gives them an advantage *at all.* But if you removed race charged terminology like "a poor person has disadvantage, but has better access/advantage than a poor disabled person," the problem of understanding intersectionality vanishes.

Nobody's saying that just because the person isn't disabled has privilege means they don't also have disadvantages, just that their ableness isn't one of them. People with disabilities suffer from unique disadvantage even people with other disadvantages won't experience.

The same is true of being a racial minority, LGBT, religious minorities, women, and other groups who will experience disadvantage that you won't.

This is literally the exact opposite of what intersectionality teaches.
