Alabama: pregnant woman shot in stomach is charged in fetus's death

Yes, that is correct. Strange as it sounds. A five month pregnant women got shot in the stomach. She survived, but lost the child. And she was charged with man slaughter, not the person who shot her.

This is were we have come to folks.

I am not a fan of this decision, but I had to find out why they did this. It turns out there was an altercation. The woman that shot her was able to give a good case for self defense:

Don't underestimate those that you oppose. It can come back to bite you.

Seems pretty reckless to initiate any altercation when one is pregnant. If one's concern is about the baby the welfare of the baby should be foremost.

Still what if the mother wanted a late term abortion. In some states she could purposely choose to end the pregnancy but because it was accidental she gets charged with a crime? At what stage does the unborn gain the protection of the state?

This could open the door to convicting women for losing a foetus after a driving accident, or any accident where the State thinks that the woman might have been careless or reckless.

But whether the State would give a hoot for that child's care, education, medicare, nourishment, warmth, security and welfare after birth is another question, I guess.

Yea, it is written in the Book of Cyril...

I assume the onus will be on any woman who miscarries to prove it wasn't intentional? Just what women need after potentially the most harrowing experience in their life; first lose a pregnancy, then to celebrate, spend hours in police interrogation trying to avoid a murder charge.

Yes! Many could face manslaughter charges, but some could face murder charges!

Did you notice that the shooter shot the pregnant woman FIVE times, and that this has been treated as a reasonable defence? All you have to do to get away from an angry pregnant woman is to run a short distance. No need to stay there and shoot her through and through, again and again. Maybe Alabama doesn't want to make a gun-issue of such incidents?

Are you glad that you live where you live?
I've moaned about so much happening to me in Kent, UK, but I should have had instant-access to the world sooner, in which case I would have shut up a lot more quickly.

Some of those US States just look totally crank.

I will take my chances with gun violence, I'd rather be shot than stabbed or having acid thrown on me.

"Today, acid attacks are reported in many parts of the world, though more likely in developing countries. Since the 1990s, Bangladesh has been reporting the highest number of attacks and highest incidence rates for women,[13][14]with 3,512 Bangladeshi people acid attacked between 1999 and 2013,[15] and in Pakistanand India acid attacks are at an all-time high and increasing every year.[16][17] Although acid attacks occur all over the world, this type of violence is most common in South Asia.[18] The UK has one of the highest rates of acid attacks per capita in the world"

I wonder if the rise in acid attacks in the U.K. has any correlation with mass immigration?

Ya think. Of course, it does. That is the preferred mode of attack (especially against women) in some of those countries of origin.

Great logic.
If you are in a crowd and an acid thrower throws acid, you may well be unharmed.
If you are in a crowd and a stabber starts stabbing, you may well be unharmed.
If you are in a crowd and a shooter with a semi-automatic starts shooting, you will probably get shot.
Think!

More people die each day in the US from gun violence than all the stabbing deaths or acid injuries in the UK in many many months.

You're pointing in any direction you can in order to avoid the crazy situation in your own country.

And for a person to shoot a pregnant woman FIVE times, and then claim self-defence (and walk free) is just indicative of how totally crazy that State is. And then to arrest/charge the shot woman for manslaughter....... well......... all I can suggest is that the voters in that State wake up, and get it right next time.

Not that I agree with this decision in any way, but you aren't telling quite the whole story. The pregnant woman started the altercation and the police ruled that the woman was merely defending herself by shooting her, which is legal there (stand your ground state). Because of that, according to the law, the pregnant woman is responsible for whatever comes after she started the fight. It sucks for sure, but it makes a bit more sense.

It should be viability. The state should not be able to force a woman to give up the use of her body to another living thing (the fetus) against her will.

It goes to show you that the intimation that this was about racism is completely unfounded, had it been about racism the shooter would not have been released. This was a serious Jerry Springeresque situation, it started with the pregnant woman starting a fight over who the "baby daddy" is and it went downhill from there.
