In my state, ballot access for the next election is assured if a party exceeds a certain percentage of the vote, but if not, the third party has to jump over all the ballot access barriers erected by the major parties that control the electoral commission.- at least here in Canada, a party receives funding from the government based on the total number of votes it received in the previous election. If my vote has no other effect, it directs a few dollars toward my party of choice that would've otherwise gone to some other party.
Voting third can be strategic as well. If a major party believes a third party acted as a spoiler and caused its defeat, it might consider adopting some of that party's ideas to help gain those voters next time around.
