I don't know how good this advice is, but I know that not everyone flowers early in life. If so, it might be unreasonable to expect oneself to have a clear sense of direction from the start. In fact, I once read a novel in which the hero was represented as a genius who had figured out life by the age of six. The author evidently thought that was a virtue of his. But to my thinking, that merely meant that he went through life with a six year old's understanding, having learned nothing about life since that age.
