  • This isn't your daily shanty, but I got to thinking about what you said about showing your birdlets videos, so when the Animaniacs came up in Chat, I was reminded of this song and thought it would be a good one to show your kids:

animaniacs - Countries of the world - YouTube

And now you've got that song in your head, too! :D
And here's your shanty for the day!

Just to mix things up, I thought I'd give you a French one. :D

Great Big Sea - Trois Navires de Ble (home made music video) - YouTube

(BTW - in case you're curious, here's a translation of the lyrics: Trois Navires de Blé - lyrics and translation)
    Unfortunately. :(

Their other songs are much better. :) "The Unicorn" was their biggest hit (as the *Irish* Rovers, anyway). It's got more Biblical allusions than I normally like in a song, but it's still cute and fun.
Oh... even if you don't think you've heard them, you've heard them.

There was a period where they decided to move away from Celtic music, so they changed their name to just "the Rovers" and put out a bunch of very different-sounding songs, including "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer".

I try to forget that part of their history.
    You too? :D

For me, it's partly nostalgia - growing up, my Dad played a fair bit of the Irish Rovers, and he liked to sing bits of one of their songs when a situation needed livening up: The Irish Rovers - Donald Where's Your Troosers - YouTube

... and it's been a bit of a running joke in my family to sing The Belle of Belfast City for my aunt (since she, my Dad and my uncle all came from Belfast, but she was the only "belle" of the bunch :) ):
The Irish Rovers - The Belle of Belfast City - YouTube
And here it is: late but worth the wait - another Canadian shanty! This one is very traditional:

Ise The B'y - Great Big Sea - YouTube

And as a special non-shanty bonus for Robbie Burns Day (BTW - happy Robbie Burns Day! :D), another song:

Auld Lang Syne (with lyrics) - YouTube
Seeing how you're formally educated in music and all, I figure there would be more value in you giving me the lessons. ;-)

BTW - sorry about the lateness of today's song. I'll get it to you at lunchtime. :(
Good morning! For today, a good Canadian shanty: Stan Rogers - Barrett's Privateers - YouTube

The story behind this one: Stan Rogers was singing in a traditional Celtic group, but he had a problem... he never got to sing lead on any of the shanties they did. He finally decided that if he actually wrote a shanty, then he'd have to get the lead part on it when they sung it... so he wrote a shanty, and here it is. :D

Another bit of trivia: it's the only song (of any genre) that I know that uses a five-beat measure - in this case, the last measure of each verse.

And you are three quarters of the way through your January! :D
    Good morning! Here's today's not-quite-a-shanty-but-I'm-calling-it-a-shanty for you:

The Irish Rover-pogues and dubliners - YouTube

Now... this is a version with Ronnie Drew from the Dubliners and the verses he sings get a bit... saucier than most renditions of this song that I've heard. Cover birdlets' ears as necessary. ;) Here's a safer version just in case you need it: The Irish Rovers - The Irish Rover - YouTube

BTW: as of precisely 6:00 am tomorrow, you will be three quarters of the way through your January! It's nearly done - hasn't it flown by? :D
    Awesome! :D

And as it turns out, I have higher priorities than food, because when they asked me if I wanted to take a run of the course at the start of the lunch break instead of going straight for the pizza, I said "sure!" :D
Naykid has his own blog now too. He wouldn't tell me what it's called but I just googled "Quagmire is a..." and it came right up.
Oh sure, but where does that leave the poor kids in 3rd world countries who can't afford monogrammed bath towels?
How can an avian evolve legs and hands instead of wings? I think this case should be investigated more vigorously.
You're spot on that it gets tiresome seeing the same identical arguments posted over and over again. The 20 year old watches a youtube video, or joins a group that is all fresh and new to him, and starts posting it all over the place like it's some great, new discovery.

As time goes on, and I get more used to writing; I am trying to economize on length of posts, and just deal with the most pertinent facts. By the time I respond to everything in a long post, I find myself running out of time to get to the other tabs that I opened, and was planning to add to.
Aww. I can picture him wanting to be a mermaid now. :)

I'm *really* hungry. I had breakfast at 5:00 am and it sounds like they won't be feeding us lunch until 2:00 pm. Could you bring me some food? I'd be eternally grateful.
