The Southeast Asians take a different view of Vedic culture. They remember Rama and Krishna, and such, but not as people from India might. It could very well be the water god as remembered by the Buddhists.

I suppose I have to ask you...what do you want out of Hinduism? I, being who I am, will stress Bhakti -faith- above all else, but there are many gods and many paths to them, and we have quite a new non-theistic Hindus.

To expand on Vishvavajra, I would say that fear is the opposite of attachment. "I want this NOT to be with/about/near me". The Fear of Death is conquered with Kali by her death-clad nature, which is to show that death itself is a good thing in regards our egos.
