So I guess there is nothing wrong with viewing Gautama in his original setting as a Vedic holy man, and the Buddha of the later traditions as something else (Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana, Zen, Pure Land, etc.).
It is entirely possible that there is a great deal of inconsistency even in a movement like Arya Samaj. In my own tradition there is plenty of inconsistency and hypocrisy. I am very unhappy about mankind in general, my own coreligionists included. ;-(
Yes, I am aware of that and those distinctions. But if the traditions of multiple deities was derived from sources unrelated to the Vedas then it would be "fair game" for criticism along with all the other features of Hinduism which have been challenged. I don't see it being disrespectful...
As a matter of fact the permissibility of women roles of authority under Talmudic Judaism is 100% permitted, and the religious establishment of this generation is engaged in a coverup using a mask they call "tradition" aside from strict legal provisions. In modern times a rabbi is a...
The chapter I saw in Dayanand Saraswati's book (I think 9) pulls no punches about other reform movements. He was very harsh about their attachment to western colonial ideas about India. He singled out the group Brahmo Samaj who were not nationalistic and were not supportive of Vedic teachings...
I am familiar with them, and they existed in the days of Dayanand Saraswati when they were identified as "Neo-Vedanta." An extremely interesting subject all round. However, there is a chronic contradiction between maintaining adherence to multiple gods while at the same time approving of the...
It's kind of hard to understand. On the one hand we find Hindu apologists agreeing with the reforms proposed by Arya Samaj to do away with the primitive accretions such as discrimination against women and the caste system yet the apologists resist any reforms in relation to the multiple deity...
Ajay0, what do you think of Dayanand Saraswati's understanding of the changes in what has become known as Buddhism? It sounds as if his understanding of the original teachings (Nikaya) that were simply regularly Vedic?
I think you missed the point. First there are the Arya Samaj who accept as binding only the Vedas, and reject all the trappings of polytheism, statues, etc. There are probably other groups as well. Plus most Protestants would say that the same Catholic Church has corrupted the true original...
So what do the Theravada think should happen to everyone else who doesn't make it? Is it a religion where they only care about themselves? That would contradict the very idea of annulling the ego......!!
In any case, how do they know that the earlier canon from the Pali language are any less...
I disagree. There can be criteria to employ. Not unlike in Christianity where a general consensus is that Mormonism is a corruption of Christianity. Is Hinduism a corruption of Vedism??
I think I am gaining clarification not only from the interesting postings on this thread but also from reading the ideas of Arya Samaj and other sources which establish a strong difference between Vedic religion and the varieties of Indian religions now called Hinduism, but which was never a...
How is it know that the Pali scriptures were composed far earlier than the Mahayana sutras when they were all put to writing around 1st century BC to 2nd century CE? Furthermore, since even the Pali documents came several hundreds years after Gautama supposedly died what is the proof that even...
When was the origin of the Mahayana sutras compared with the dates of origin of the Pali Tipitaka, and why do the Therevada reject the Mahayana sutras??
And how do the Therevada relate to the mahayana concept of boddisatva?
I didn't realize how much Buddhism "developed" over the centuries, long after Gautama was said to have lived, including the forms of Mahayana and Tantric Buddhism, not to mention the innovations of Nagarjuna in reinventing teachings to be portrayed as seriously atheistic (sunyata/emptiness and...
