    Determinism

What if we could somehow break out of the illusion? I think that is a question to play with :)

Is it possible to have monotheism without panentheism (or vice versa)?

Hi Yes, I find personally that monotheism which tries to distinguish itself from panentheism is nit picking rather than persuasive. It comes down to "creator versus creation", however both are linked in my view. For example, separation in space or time does not imply that two or more objects...

    Determinism

I say all things are being determined as they unfold. It is not combatibalism for the reason that now doesn't hold more than choice and choice is made based on conditions. So choice is determined action. I am with the Hindus (and Sikhs to a degree) in that it is all down to the Gunas and karma.

    Meditation and the Ohm

Hi Yes, the Mandukya Upanishad is an insight into AUM and its meaning. http://www.celextel.org/upanishads/atharva_veda/mandukya.html

    Pantheism and Monism

Perhaps it is the context which is adding confusion? Feel free to quote if so.

There is only one God and his name is Death.

A being cannot be certain of death. No being can be certain of any future state.

    Pantheism and Monism

Hi I do not believe there is a difference at the core, unless we break down the words into their etymological parts (e.g. Pan + theism) or use existing quotes as below. Both words were coined to try to explain an idea that everything is one or that there is no duality, it seems to me. :) I...

    How to discern belief systems?

For me it is theology or philosophy that discerns the systems most. Prayer, rituals etc follow from that. The most important thing is a coherent philosophy that is both empirically true and testable. Logic for me is foremost.

    Motive or Results?

Hi Fireside Hindu I would say it is about "motive" as we cannot control the results. So in your example, the motive of the politician to bring himself good press can be seen as distinct from the actual result of brining a better life for others. They can appear to be linked of course: to the...

    what is more likely?

Why depend on others, is there a limitation with yourself? Just asking, not provoking. :)

    difficulty in converting

Good question. Perhaps it is never possible to give up a memory. When the person who has given up something stops looking behind them and starts looking forward, not speaking, acting and rarely thinking of a former life then I think that is good enough. We don't have a choice on memories but...

    Self-realization/Enlightenment question.

This verse seems apt: Bhagavad Gita Chapter 14, Verse 2. By becoming fixed in this knowledge, one can attain to the transcendental nature, which is like My own nature. Thus established, one is not born at the time of creation nor disturbed at the time of dissolution.

From A Philosophical Standpoint: How Do you See the World ?

Yes, sleep seems to be a critical experience in confirming that any idea of a permanent external world is a label too and could be subject to impermanence and change. We tend to convince ourself that the world or something material will be there because it was there when we last looked and it is...

I have a question for all members

Sorry to pick up on a point you address with someone else, however your first paragraph struck me as true and I wanted to ask you, how can we apply this 'impossibility to prove' to our daily lives? Regarding your second paragraph, my opinion is that one can still learn from something that one...

From A Philosophical Standpoint: How Do you See the World ?

I agree with you both. It is transient and changing. However there is a sense of permanence running through it which I can attribute to greater things, for example the sun will rise, my clothes on me are the same, the world will be there when I wake in the morning. However on closer inspection...

Taoism - Misfortune comes from having a body.

Yes, great stuff :D I want to see the whole movie now. Your thoughts ring true with me. It is perhaps impermanence and impermance is a misfortune. Seems a bit negative if I word it like that as if life is a misfortune, don't you think, bro or am I missing something? :)

    Self-realization/Enlightenment question.

Firstly I think the answer to DanielR's quesiton might also depend on the individuality of the soul or not. If there is no individual distinct soul then there is no going and returning in theory, it is rather something else which causes Samsara and any sensation of coming and going. Also I...
