This isn't karma, it is the gunas. There are two forces: Karma and Prakriti. Prakriti consists of Gunas and it is the Gunas which make you suffer and hurt. You are Atma which is known as sat-chit-ananda.

The benefit of a Guru is that they can remove doubt which may not be removed through scripture etc. I do not hold that there is any mantra which explicitly requires a Guru to make it move valuable, other than a Guru will remove any doubt.

My understanding is that God reveals Himself to mankind. So a holy books is a record of that revelation. It is a requirement more than an assumption in some cases because man must refer to the revelation to know Him (or hear someone who knows the revelation).
I would suggest putting a suit and tie on, going to each agency in your city/town with a copy of your CV and try to speak to them. Try to get any job, be open and willing, then fine tune it after that.
