I hear what you are saying, but I tend to agree with Riverwolf; my definition of a deity would need to specify "intangible", as my God isn't tangible ( as far as I know :)). I don't know whether that is going to apply to everyone though.
Perhaps defining "deities" or "Gods" is going to be...
I am so sorry to hear that Jay - I think anyone would agree with the above; unfortunately, it reminds me of my mother's last years...Life can seem frightfully cruel.
I wonder why ? I somehow sense a feeling of "Oh, blast, here comes another theist trying to ram his religion down my throat"; that is never my intention (which, technically I suppose makes me a pretty lousy disciple) - I tend to think that someone whom is pushed through a door will be reluctant...
But I am talking of an "ideal" father here - mine was certainly not perfect, but I am proud to have had the opportunity to be his son
I don't believe in something I can't conceptualise, so, in many ways, I believe that your "I act morally now in order to make moral outcomes happen" is just as...
No way! I am merely trying to suggest that we may well all have the same ideals in common; as a theist, I include a deity as a "father", but I recognise that that is probably illogical, certainly something I cannot claim to be wholly certain of.
I was thinking about this one evening, when it...
Lately, I have been struggling with my faith; as it is, I think the doubts are beginning to disappear.
However, it occurred to me that the principles of the Lord's prayer - if taken literally - could equally well be a template suitable for non-theists.

I agree, to me, Christianity is not about hate - nor judging.....In fact, "punishing" people is God's job - not ours
Matthew 7:1-2/3
Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged,
and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Strangely enough, I saw this a couple of days ago...

Scientists have discovered that smoke from cooking stoves and dirty engines is causing glaciers to melt faster.
The glaciers are already under pressure from climate change...
Mother was English (though her grandfather was a Russian Jew from Odessa, escaping from the pogroms), Father was Belgian - though, as Belgium was an artificially "constructed" country to keep the peace between the Dutch, the Germans and the French, his ancestry does leave me with a question...
I don't know that I would agree wholeheartedly; science has been know to "get it thoroughly wrong". True, religion cannot be verified - I think I would have to use a "judge each case using what I can find out, and intuition"....
That's an interesting question; I can only reply by my understanding - that my mind is part of my physical body (which will decay and "turn to dust" at the time of my death, whereas my soul is what will survive my death - and that is the part of "me" that will be judged by God.
