Abortion and the death penalty

We Never Know

No Slack
I support abortion if the girl got pregnant by rape, incest, molestation, or is under age(17 and less).
I don't support it for adults who go sleep around without protection like its a contest and should know better.

The death penalty I support if there is scientific, forensic and DNA evidence that shows no doubt.
If its only circumstantial and/or questionable evidence then I don't support it.

I’m pro choice. Get abortions, under any circumstance.
Death penalty ehhhh. Even DNA can be wrong. You can pay compensation for wrongful convictions. What are you gonna do if you kill somebody wrongly? Pay for the funeral?

Wrongful convictions can be very expensive. Funerals not so much. It is a sad state that a life taken in error is less expensive than a wrongful conviction.

As someone who can remember doing stupid things, not least when young, I'm delighted to know you never did anything stupid. I'm impressed.

But I can't say I agree with pregnancy-as-punishment, which is what you're proposing.
The death penalty I support if there is scientific, forensic and DNA evidence that shows no doubt.
I don't support the death penalty. It's not that innocent people will be executed (though they will) or that middle and upper class people will be put to death by the state at a much lower rate than poorer people for equivalent offences (though that too will happen).

I don't think the state should kill people. Or rather, I think the state should not kill people.

I don't support abortion at all. Rape is not a justification for me. I heard it said, "why would anyone would have a rape baby." If the value of a child's existence is dependent on what happened to the mother, I find that totally, um, off. What does that say about the mother and how she views her other children?

Understandable views like the baby will die anyway, it seems understandable. I've never had issues between "mother or child" since a mother would die to protect her living child, why is pregnancy different?

The other justification is the baby will suffer it's whole life. I'll never agree with abortion but that and the baby dying real early is the only ones I'd give an ear to.

I think of it as murder.

I don't like people killing others for Any reason. I don't support taking lives.

Legal justifications like war and self defense I understand. Capitol punishment, I'm totally against.

Regardless the legal and medical justifications I'm still against both. I've never was put into a decision to decide. A mother doesn't just say "let me abort"...I'm sure there's a lot of thinking and medical consultation involved. Instincts usually win over intentional decisions in self defense.

We Choose to kill inmates.

Regardless, my position stands.

Ultimately, my opinions on the matter are irrelevant because I am not allowed to write the laws of the land. However, the laws of the land are also irrelevant if I have the ability to carry out an action and choose to do so. I do not require any human's permission to act within my power and ability.

I agree with you about the death penalty. I believe it is appropriate under the circumstances you noted.

I do not believe that abortion should be used to prevent the birth of an unwanted child unless there are medical reasons for doing so, and medical reasons would include physical, mental or emotional.

My religious beliefs are as follows:

Abortion merely to prevent the birth of an unwanted child is strictly forbidden in the Cause. There may, however, be instances in which an abortion would be justified by medical reasons, and legislation on this matter has been left to the Universal House of Justice. At the present time, however, the House of Justice does not intend to legislate on this very delicate issue, and therefore it is left to the consciences of those concerned who must carefully weigh the medical advice in the light of the general guidance given in the teachings.

Very much pro-choice.

Mistakes happen, condoms break, contraceptives fail (a good friend of mine has just found herself to be pregnant, she has a coil that 'moved' - she is in a steady relationship and will keep the child)
What about the mental health of the mother?
What punishment do you proposed for the 'sleep around' fathers?
Are you happy for the state to support these children who are born unwanted?
What about children who will be born deformed?

You do realise that the most common form of abortion is a mis-carriage - so I could argue that god is pro abortion.

Finally, banning anything leads to 'back-street' suppliers of the service.

Although it hardly makes me happy, especially when done at later stages of pregnancy, I have to support abortion as a principle for any possible mother, given that her wishes or life should take priority, in my view.

I don't support the death penalty as a punishment under any circumstances (apart from wars and such), even though there will be many who might deserve to die and not place a burden on society or create a risk whilst still being alive. And the evidence seems to show that the death penalty does not work as a deterrent.

Of course there is a bit of a problem supporting one and not the other, but there it is.

The Indian law and myself completely agree with you.
Even DNA can be wrong.
I have full faith in Indian judiciary system. Very meticulous, they take all precautions - exempting those where there is the slightest doubt.

Well, you could always execute the judge, the prosecuting attorney, and/or the arresting officer in such instances. Do that a few times, and wrongful convictions would disappear quite quickly.

I take a very pragmatic approach to both topics, though that gives very different answers given that they're entirely different questions.

Abortion is tricky, probably impossible, to fully resolve. It's going to happen regardless of what law or society says and is going to be the least worst option in at least some circumstances. That doesn't mean it should be encouraged or welcomed though. I really think that if all the time, money and effort poured in to arguing about abortion was redirected to valid means to prevent it from becoming a consideration in the first place, we'd all be in a much better situation. Better birth control options, better medical and social support, better health and sex education should have much more focus.

On the death penalty, I have a very simple question that I've never seen properly addressed; What's the point? Criminal justice is meant to be about deterrent and protection. Given that the kind of offences that would typically see a death penalty are either acts of insanity or passion, I don't believe the existence of a death penalty offers any real deterrent effect. And since the public can be protected by imprisoning dangerous criminals (and just maybe actually rehabilitating them), execution seems unnecessary for that purpose, especially given how long many death penalties take to be actually carried out.

Well, my view is that people who have that kind of power over people's lives, whether it's a cop with a gun or a judge with a gavel, they have no business "making a mistake."

I would tend to agree.
Imo the abortion issue often comes down to a power trip. I’m not suggesting that anti choicers are in it just to control women. I think most are sincere in their beliefs.
But it is a tad convenient that it just happens to revolve around a woman’s bodily autonomy

Generally against abortion except in medical emergencies, rape or incest. It's always tragic in my eyes.

I support capital punishment.

I posted this in general discussion because its not a debate. Its seeking your opinions, nothing more
.
And yes I support abortion when its a medical emergency. I figured that would be a given and did not list it.
