I think I would like to get a book copy of sri gurugranth sahib but would like to ask if you can recomend a good translation , I would like to see it in gurumukti with transliteration and translation to english . but I would prefer to take advice as to which is a good faithfull translation .

many comercial translations you can find of the vedic literature are translated by sanskrit schollars rather than by pure devotees , if possible I like to buy my books from temples then I am happy that these translations are approved , I wonder do gurdwaras have their own publishing houses and book shops ?

Unfortuantely English will never be able to give justice to the original Gurbani. The power of original languages to express complex, abstract ideas to others of the same language can't be understated, and was in fact even acknowledged by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions - the differences between Greek and Latin languages impacted the schism of the church.

I can suggest translations to you but they will all fall short of the mark.

Personally I like Professor Sant Singh Khalsa MD's translation for easy reading, mostly. You can download the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji translated by the Professor here, along with many other files: Files with English Translation & Phonetic Transliteration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Rawel Singh Ji is also translating Gurbani in a very technical way if that interests you. His blog is here: Files with English Translation & Phonetic Transliteration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

But as for 'most faithful translation' though I am at a loss, sorry.

Sikhnet have just released a 5 volume set of Guru Granth Sahib Ji but it is Gurmukhi (original script) and English only, no phonetic transliteration. Here: Siri Guru Granth Sahib with English Translation - High Quality Printed Hardcover 5 Volume Set | SikhNet

I would recommend, if you have a smart phone, try downloading isearch gurbani app. You can read Gurmukhi, transliteration and English, and it's like having the whole Granth Sahib in the palm of your hand. You can also bookmark pages.

Unfortuantely English will never be able to give justice to the original Gurbani.

this I realise and is for that reason that I would realy like the transliteration , our guru has us recite verses in sanskrit even if we canot read the script , then he will give translations . after all this is the original way it was taught from guru to deciple through repetition , I do not understand much but have become fammiliar with the more prominent principles at least helps me understand a little when some one is giving teachings or listening to your beautifull shabads .

I can suggest translations to you but they will all fall short of the mark.

in buddhist prayer it is often said that from all holy beings ....".blessings rain down ". ....or .granting blessings and purifying ...:namaste... this is the grace or the mercy of holy beings ,.... then the mind purified by the gurus grace , becomes the proper receptical to absorb and reflect upon the divine word .

smart phone ??? what is that , we have many hills and lots of sheep here and no reception I am amased that this computer works , a freinds donation and an attempt to bring me in to the modern world so what am I doing , reading religious texts any thing but engage in the modern world !!!

Yes, so far translations have been quite literal. It takes so long to translate the whole thing. I can provide some good snippets of translation but not ones that have transliteration together with them but if you know your way around www.srigranth.org you can read the quality translations and refer to the Gurbani ang yourself.

If you are interested in this I can recommend the translations by Max Arthur MacAuliffe. MacAuliffe was a senior Sikh-British administrator and entered the Indian Civil Service in 1862. He worked closely with Sikhs, translated most (if not all) of Granth Sahib Ji, and was possibly the very first 'western' convert to Sikhi, reciting Japji Sahib on his deathbed. You can read some of his translations here: The Sikh Religion Vol. 1 Index (at the bottom, he starts with Japji). He has used an older form of English though full of 'thy' and 'thou' etc.

I believe these books are an awesome treasure to Sikhi for English-speaking people, having been written before everything went formally pear-shaped around 1900 and well before the Sikh Rehat Maryada was written in 1941.

Another good translator is Nikky Guninder Kaur Singh. I have a copy of her book 'The Name of my Beloved' in which she's translated key bania including Sukhmani Sahib. She endeavours to do so in a gender-neutral way.

I have just looked this up and been reading about him , yes this sounds very much like the kind or translation that I will enjoy , it sounds as if he held the sikh religion with the highest regard , I have tried to down load the first volume but my computer is having some problem so I will attempt it again later .

When Guru Nanak Sahib Ji travelled to Banaras, the Brahman Pandits invited Guru Ji to join them to do Aarti of God. Guru Nanak Sahib Ji agreed and went and sat inside the Mandir. The Pandits stood in front of the stone idol gods and started to wave platters with lights, incense and offering place on it. When they had finished they complained to Guru Nanak Sahib Ji. "You said you would join us to do the Aarti of God, but you remain sat on the floor with your eyes closed!" Guru Nanak Sahib Ji then replied with this Shabad:

Gagan Mai Thaal Rav Chand Deepak Banay Taarikaa Mandal Janak Motee | Dhoop Mal-aanlo Pavan Chavro Karay Sagal Banraa-ay Foolant Jotee | Kaisee Aartee Ho-ay | Bhav Khandnaa Tayree Aartee | Anhataa Sabad Vaajant Bhayree | Rahaao |

The whole sky is (as if) the plate. The sun and moon are the lamps (placed in the plate). The stars and their orbs, are as if, studded pearls (in the plate). The wind fragranced with sandalwood is as if the (temple) incense. The wind is the fan. All the plants of the world are the altar flowers in offering to You, O Luminous Lord. ||1|| (In nature) what a beautiful Aartee, lamp-lit worship service of You is this! O Destroyer of Fear, this is Your Aarti, Ceremony of Light. so perfect , krsna in the bhagavad gita says , ...
''allways think of me , become my devotee , offer obeisances to me , worship me, thus being completely absorbed in me you will surely come to me .'' bg 9 v 34

in chapter 10 krsna goes on to explain that he is present everywhere and in everything , ... ''I am the trancendental Om , ...I am the chanting of the holy names , ...and of unmoveable things I am the himalayas , .... I am the oceans, ...I am the begining the middle and the end , ...Iam the conclusive truth.....what I have spoken to you is but a mere indication of my infinate opulances'' ,....
''know that all opulent and glorious creations spring from abut a spark of my splendor '', .....with a single fragment of my self I pervade the entire universe .''

so yes even I as a vaisnava must agree that to worship the lord only by the ritual performance of arti is to have missed the glories of naam , and to not worship the lord in everything is not to know the lord , it is only for our benifit that the lord appears in any one form , ....such is the lords mercy :namaste
