This is also what Christians say about gay rights advocacy. That it's some slippery slope to total takeover of everything they hold dear (and straight) if not opposed in every unsegregated category. And it's just as much of a shallow appeal to emotion and courting tribalism.

Little mermaid is no less their story than it is yours. And the owners of the Ariel version you grew up with are making another version (And I will stress additional version. The version you liked isn't going anywhere) they want to do with their character. Do you've got no room for griping that doesn't, at best, come off as self-centered or, at worst, come off as just hating black representation where you don't deem fit. (Aka, racism).

Of course she isn’t really trans. The reality is she is a cartoon character. Not even that. She is an idea, she is a meme. A mutating and replicating meme.

What this idea creates in your head may be different than what is is someone else’s head. If in your head she is a “mermaid” than in someone else”s head she is “trans”. There is no reality here to “fact check”.

I understand why, but I doubt that's the reason.
People who use these sorts of arguments often perceive themselves as a persecuted minority just as much as others do but instead of being grateful for the privilege they do have, they punch down at people with less power and/or try to appease the people punching down at them, which means trying to make oneself one of the 'reasonable' minorities to the dirtbags on top, the people who use the same sort of arguments about gays that TERFs have about transwomen. (E.g. that gays are invading straight spaces and grooming children merely by being allowed to exist in the presence of or as children.)

TERFs being a bunch of insecure women pushing men as dangerous would-be predators out of fear and loathing, and it spills onto transwomen who they paint as dangerous liars and psychopaths because they haven't bothered to do one iota of research past that fear response.
