I would getting set to rip you a new one, Connor, when it occurred to me that you are actually hitting on my own thinking. In my view, we are simply just another animal that is native to the planet. There IS no real gap between us and the so-called lower animal life forms that exist. Instead of talons, poisons, exoskeletons, etc we have a larger brain to use in order to defend ourselves. The brain is our first line of defence in those terms.
I will agree that we are different from other animals, that much is clear, however the point of this discussion is to remind people that we have always been and will always be just another animal on this small planet even though our egos dont especially like that fact at times.

I like the Buddhist view that humans and animals share the same realm, and have the same capacity for Buddha-nature.
But I do think there are significant enough differences between humans and animals in the realm of mind (not necessarily as species sharing an environment) to warrant at least a provisionally seperate classification.
