Buddhist and Hindu talk of being self-less. Not letting desire control them.

... based on the idea that letting desires control oneself is harmful. It still gets back to self-interest.

Jesus selfless in the sense of putting aside desire for personal wealth to help your fellowman.

... which has to be appreciated in context with God the Father's insistence that he be paid every bit of what he was "owed".

Whatever your personal views of religion, the point is man has a natural inclination towards greed.

... which tends to be expressed in our religions (as in most human expression).
