The goal of any national election is not to win over the staunch supporters of one side, it's to lure in the moderates and centrists.
If you can name me an example of an extreme Left or Right winger who has ever won a broad election, then you'll have a point.
In order to win, candidates have to centralize themselves. Preaching to the choir, or pandering to the voters who were already going to vote for you doesn't net any new votes - but it will alienate some people and keep them from voting for you. Taking a hard stance against things that aren't really that big of a deal, like people getting married, only serves to alienate. They haven't gained a single vote by spouting this predictable rhetoric.
