I always thought that was a kind of pep-talk. I do agree they could have set the bar a bit lower though

Whitewashed tombs and broods of vipers and dogs aren't exactly terms of endearment. It's a lot easier to live by Jesus' standards when you realize they're a lot lower than you thought.
If we can decern why jesus talked forcefully to pharisees rather than every day joe smoes. He was pretty nice to those not involved in politics.
