Avatar Discussion (Spoilers Ahead)

A few things irritated me about it:

1) Before the great war in the end, the rebels had the time to paint themselves blue.... as well as the helicopter... which would not help if they were trying to actually do some damage. Did they want to get shot?

2) The plot was a bit old hat - it felt like Pocahonats with blue cats... with the story line of every "love story" that's manufactured these days.

3) The language - a few of them just "knew" a great variety of the English language?

Other than that, I loved it :) The visuals were SPECTACULAR!

They mentioned that before the start of the movie, the humans had operated a school for the Na'vi. I figured that's where they learned.

I would have assumed it was more for the children.... especially since the older ones, with the exception of the main female kitteh.... couldn't understand a word of it.

Im not gonna drag this out
because ive already said enough and quite clearly in my first post

i will say this even if the use of language changes the fact remains that
*****
is still by men widely used as an insult in this day and age!

and I'll add Sexism has been around longer than any other form of oppression.
look in your own back yard for crying out loud: Porn, men with Guns, bankers Gambling, Male Dominated Sport. So dont try and tell a person whos had most types of oppression slung her way
that a popcorn movie dont matter "its just fantasy" coz it aint ok to think i dont care so no on else should. Ive had to question everything I am over my 25 years, and even if I have to go alone I'll Challenge That Wich Upsets Me!

Whatever. I still loved this non-offensive film. Sorry you couldn't enjoy it.

If you think it really offended you, take it up with James Cameron himself, the director who puts strong, independent women in his films.

What does that have to do with anything? The term ********* is still widely in use, too. There's nothing especially wrong with the term *****.

"Male-dominated sports"? Of course, sports are male-dominated. Men are generally bigger and stronger than women. We are just better physically at sports, for the most part. Men are better, on average, than women at some things, and women are better, on average, than men at some things. Plus, sports tend to be enjoyed mostly by men, which means that men's sports are obviously going to be much more popular.

I'm also not seeing the sexism in this movie. There were strong female characters, more so than in a lot of movies. There are certainly problems with this movie, but I think you're a little to sensitive with this sexism thing.

your not seeing it in context with actual society because it just says that its fine to just up n leave with someone youve known for a few days
How is it even remotely degrading for Jake to say he has chosen his woman, but she must also choose him?

Plenty of women enjoy porn just as much as men. And have you ever heard of Anne Oakley? If you haven't, I suggest you do a quick Google search. Gambling is gender neutral. Banks, as with any corporation, do tend to be male dominate. But sports are male dominate because men are biological bigger and stronger. It's a fact of life. And most people don't like overly athletic and buff women because they reach a point where they look more like men than women.

End of the day alot of these things are subliminal to most people it would seem and since you brought it up Im a Black Trans-Female Lesbian, I know my history and I constently question what I see and believe...
I'm also transsexual, and I found nothing offensive about this movie. Questioning things is good, but not to the point where you see things that are not there, i.e., sexist themes in Avatar, then you need to take a few steps back.
