How am i the only person to have voted for Dune???
No. I voted for it too. ;)

I was caught between voting for Dune, or choosing "Other" and voting for Stargate SG-1. Stargate is a good one because it allows for new worlds, realities, and societies with every world encountered. The problem is that the show often fails to explore the myriad of possibilites, let alone make those they do explore realistic enough. Hense my choice.

I'm a Babylon 5 'lover' - Atlantis ? I must watch that - what chanel is it on, do you know?:)
Over here, it's on the SciFi channel (usually comes with basic cable/satellite).

I enjoy Dune, but the complexity and richness of the Uplift Universe, and Known Space, both eclipse the Dune universe, IMHO. I think it's because in both of these there are varieties of intelligent aliens. In Dune, all of the intelligences are basically human (whether evolved or not). Your mileage may vary, of course.

I'm a stargate fan as well. Now, SG1 has had its good moments, and we've seen some brilliant sci-fi, and i like the way in which it doesn't take itself as seriously as other sci-fi does, it has dried up as of late, and I think Atlantis is much better. It's the same kind of principle, but I think it is so much better, even though there's only been one series so far. To me, atlantis just seems to be sci-fi the way sci-fi should be.

i love star wars, but I'll have to go with "Other" and say that stargate: atlantis takes the top prize!

I voted for Star Wars because that has broobably been my favorite for the longest. I also love Dune. I read the first Dune book last summer and I absolutely loved it. Star Trek is ok, but overall I'd say Star Wars (the originals: the dirtier, "used" universe) is the best. Haven't looked at many of the others though. I am looking foreward to Seeing War of the Worlds however...

And Marvin is great too.:)

Ah, I can't say I really like Atlantis as much... mostly because I don't think the Wraiths are as cool as the Gua'old.

I agree. I loved Dune but merely because of talented writing style (like the banquet scene in the first book is absolutly sublime in my opinion) rather than the universe in which it was set which is a direct contrast to why I liked other sci-fi series. For example, I have to admit that Star Trek: The Next Generation started off rather badly using horrible techniques such as focusing the camera on a character whilst they stare into space to demonstrate that what has just happened has had an emotional effect on them. Thank goodness it picked up with the appearence of the Borg.

My favourite would have to be the Confederation from Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy. It's quite refreshing to have an SF universe that doesn't go down the atheistic materialist route. Out of the options given here I'd have gone with Dune, for similar reasons.

The only problem i have with stargate, is (unlike the film) everyone speaks english, what are the chances of that? AND they all have American accents, even the Asgard! Did i miss an episode where SG-1 all had babelfish jammed in their earholes?

Also Macgyver (O'Neil) pisses me off, i imagine the other members of the team secretly hate him too.

i know that in stargate, they all speak english, but they do in practically every other sci fi series. In other sci-fi, there's always some universal translator, or some plot device which makes it all sound english. i like how in stargate, it's just acknowledged that yeah, it's TV, and in TV land, they speak english for the sake of it. Just think how rubbish it would be if every episode, they spent the first half learning the local lingo!

And the wraith/goa'uld debate could go on for hours! But i kinda like the wraith. OK, sucking the lif eout of you is implausible, but it's a cool scary thing!

I just love "The Day the Earth Stood Still"..for me it was the classic scifi movie and probably always will be. Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal and Hugh Marlowe were great and don't forget Sam Jaffe who played the Einstein character was also the old Lama in "Lost Horizon".

What you should do is this feature together with "Stranger from Venus" also with Patricia Neal and compare the two flicks...

Both do an excellent job of portraying the paranoid military/security response as compared to the pacifist approach.

There's also a lot implications in both films dealing with religious and social issues when/if contact with aliens occur.
