I believe the easiest way to describe it is as a "Civil Union."

Civil - as in bound through a legal civil means.

Union - as in it is the joining of these two persons, not only in the eyes of the law, but spiritually as well.

I do not think the topic of sex or sexual orientation is a factor at all.

Should a woman divorce her husband because he has sustained an injury that no longer allows him to have an erection? That would be very selfish, especially when she had sworn to a court and/or a Deity that she would stay with him in sickness and health, for better or worse, til death do them part. Very selfish...
