I don't know about your country but here in the US you are free to...
Fish as long as you buy a license
-certain fish cost you an extra tag
Hunt as long as you buy a license
-certain game cost you an extra tag
Drive as long as you pay license fees
-and extra fees to license your vehicle
Own land as long as you pay yearly taxes
Own vehicles as long as you pay yearly taxes
Own equipment as long as you pay yearly taxes
Swim in the river as long as you pay a parking fee
Camp at the river as long as you pay a camping fee
Etc, etc, etc.

We are free to do many many things as long as we pay the fees lol

Freedom isn't free *****.

Is a popular saying. I prefer the Spiderman version of it.

I don't make a claim either way but an extra 26+ million votes did come in 2020 compared to 2004 -2016. And that many more votes will make some wonder.

2004- 121 million votes
2008- 129 million votes
2012- 126 million votes
2016- 128 million votes
2020- 155 million votes.
Yep, this should be seen as good news.

Easier access to the voting process due to Covid. And a terrible president named trump. The 155 million is still a low turnout of available voters.

The higher turnout is one reason why republicans want to make voting more difficult in 2022 and 2024.

It seems like Southern racists have never quite been on board with the idea of democracy. They didn't like it in 1788 (Constitution ratified), or in 1861 (Civil War), or in 1964 (Civil Rights Act), and they still don't like it now. I think that to them, white supremacy means democracy is fine but only if the right side wins, namely their side. When their side doesn't win "enough," democracy becomes an impediment.

Right now, we're seeing two trends colliding. One is the demographic replacement that is fairly rapidly replacing old white racists who are dying off, with voting-age teenagers who are diverse, tolerant, cosmopolitan types. In probably less than a decade, it will be impossible for a Republican to win a US presidential election for at least another generation, at least without gutting their party's traditional platform. The second trend, though, is white Christian nationalists and racists abandoning democratic ideals in order to cling to power. The right-wing propaganda echo chamber is making this trend even worse.

So, will the US government be functionally overthrown by the people who can't stand giving up their power and privilege, or will their political power be permanently cut off before they can enact such a scheme? We'll find out, probably within the next 10 years. It sounds like Canada is already poised to start contingency-planning for the US becoming a dictatorship.

Still baffles me that not everyone votes in America. Considering just often I hear it boasting about loving democracy. Though I suppose not voting can be viewed as exercising a given right as well

Many people are very apathetic and think voting is a waste of time as it doesn't change anything.

I blame the status quo. Many don't think their votes will mean much. of course trump was a game changer, and he is so corrupt that many were motivated to vote, on both sides. About 10 million more people voted for trump in 2020. But about 14 million more voted for Biden. trump brought out more lazy republican voters, but he also brought out even more lazy democrat voters.

It's also because a lot of people switched their votes. Like I switched from voting Dem for president to voting for Trump last year. I am no lazy voter.

Switched votes? Do you mean changed their mind about a candidate?

Why would you decide to vote for a corrupt and inept candidate like trump in 2020? I can see how some might take him for granted in 2016, but not in 2020.

I'm saying that a lot of the people who voted for Trump last year didn't vote for him in 2016, so he flipped some votes.

Why do you care why I voted for him? I don't care why Biden voters voted for a corrupt, creepy, racist dementia case who is a puppet of the military industrial complex, who helped throw a lot of poor people in jail/prison with his awful legislation and likes to brag that he essentially wrote the Patriot Act. I mean, have fun, I guess.

This is why republicans in some swing states are gutting their election boards and replacing g members with people sympathetic to the idea that republicans are entitled to power. This is where the threat to democracy lies.

Let's ope it goes higher despite the efforts of republicans. We need more to cast votes.

2020 was probably by far the easiest election to vote in and still 25-26% chose not to vote.

In 2024 if covid isn't a threat and mail ins are over(less accepted due to no pandemic), more will choose not to vote.

Surely we have better than nursing home aged candidates(no offence to anyone).
In 2024 Trump will be 78 and Biden 82.

I preferred Tulsi Gabbard but the awful DNC sabotaged her like they did Bernie Sanders in 2016. They seem happy to ram unpopular or even hated (like Hillary) candidates down the voter's throats and refuse to listen to their base.

I'm not sure why some voters would like Hilary but not Biden. Perhaps you are correct but I find your suggestion improbable.

Why do you care why I voted for him?
Frankly I'm curious why anyone would vote for trump in 2020. I can see why some naive votes would vote for him in 2016, but by 2019 he showed himself to be inept and corrupt. He's facing numerous criminal investigations, and may face indictment for contributing to the Jan 6 attack. Republicans can do so much better, and America deserves better than trump.

None of this characterization is based on facts. It sounds as if you have been duped by disinformation.
