Do you as a Muslim believe in women's equality?

Woodrow LI

I've never asked a Muslim if they believe in women's equality?

No
I do not believe any 2 people should be treated equally no matter what their gender is.
I believe in fair and just treatment for all.

Equal treatment usually is neither fair nor just.

a man has 2 children a boy and a girl. If he sends them both to feed the horses should they be treated equal and both have to carry a 100 pound bail of hay. Or should they be treated fairly and each carry only what they can carry comfortably?
No 2 people are equal, we all have different strengths and weaknesses we all should be treated fairly in accordance with our abilities and limitations.

Should all people have the same common respect, liberties and rights under law as everyone else? Two men have "equality" in rights and liberties. It does not mean that they themselves are equal as individuals.

Do Muslim women believe that as men are equal to each other in that respect should women also?

Contrary to popular believe Muslim woman are to have equal rights. Including The right to rule, (Quite a few Muslim rulers have been women)
The right to an education, actually all Muslims including women are obligated to reach their maximum level of education they can attain.

Historically Muslim women haven been
Religious leader
Heads of state
Educators
Wealthy business owners
Virtually every role men have held

I know women who are able to drive a truck and repair cars....and men who can't even use a corkscrew.
so...what are we talking about?
besides, it is scientifically proven that women's sex drive and sex pleasure are much higher than man's.
so...why should women deserve special treatments?
Nature has already been generous enough to them

Out of interest what do you make of the Islamic inheritance law?
The male is to inherit twice of what the female should have.

All Abrahamic religions have become extremely sexist, Yeshua isn't included as he tried to teach equality...Yet Christianity, Islam and Judaism are beyond a joke or more bluntly, disgustingly sexist. :(

So when you say does Islam believe in equality, depends what you compare it against.... If you compared it to nature, where we see females organizing everything and being the matriarchs or in comparison these 3 Abrahamic religions, which all have teachings on that women are incapable of learning.

They shouldn't
They should be treated fairly in accorcance with what they do.

Equal pay for equal work production. I think piece work was the most fair, but it was also the most abused.

To understand why that is fair, one needs to understand a woman's financial obligations. A woman has no responsibility for any household expenses, no matter how much money she has.. The male members of her family are obligated to provide all her household expenses. A woman's money is all hers alone and she is free to use as she pleases. With no financial obligations.
Also a woman can place in her nikkah (marriage contract) a dower that she desires, this can be very high and it is to be paid in full prior to the calculation of any inheritance. It is not uncommon that it is so high there is no money left over for any inheritance. I find it to be quite common for the inheritance to be simply symbolic and nobody gets anything except the widow, who collects the balance owed on her dower.

Have they done so proportionally or are they usually the exception rather than the rule?

Can a Muslim woman marry a non Muslim man as a Muslim man may marry a non Muslim woman (with of course the intent of converting her).
Can a Muslim woman have many husbands?
Is a Muslim woman free to choose not to wear a headdress of any kind while in public?

yes...what about those men who decide to be celibate and childless?

having a wife and children is a man's choice. Nobody forces him to do so

The Importance of Girls’ Education in Islam

by Farah Onaid

Women and girls have been victims of ruthless power struggles for centuries in all societies and cultures around the world. This hegemony over women has been exercised in the form of Sati, Hitobashira, Karo-Kari and the killing of witches, which are only a few to mention. Sadly, but truly, many societies including some Muslim societies continue to exercise this patriarchy in different forms such as the denial to education, unequal salaries compared to men in workplaces, forced marriages and prostitution, among many others.

Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (pbuh), came at a time when the Arab society, like so many patriarchal societies at that time, was rife with abhorrent practices against girls. He preached Islam, liberating women and girls in every walk of life, education being a prime aspect. This article examines the facts about the importance of female education in Islam. It does so through referencing verses of the Quran, Islam’s holy book, and hadith, authentic traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), along with offering a short glimpse of his wives’ level of education.

Let us start with the first Quranic revelation:

Read in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging form. Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, who taught by means of the pen; taught man what he did not know. (96:1-5)

These verses address humankind to seek knowledge and delve in critical thinking. The emphasis laid in the acquisition of knowledge, in the above verses, surpasses any statement or action denying girls’ the right to education. Had these verses only been for men, it would be inconceivable to imagine the extent of progression that the society made in a mere twenty-three years — the entire duration of the revelation of the Quran.

Is a Muslim woman free to choose not to wear a headdress of any kind while in public?

Can a Muslim woman marry a non Muslim man as a Muslim man may marry a non Muslim woman (with of course the intent of converting her).

Moot question as it is impossible for a Muslim woman to remain a Muslim if she marries a non-Muslim as a Muslim woman is obligated to support her husbands religion and be half of his religious obligation. A non Muslim woman ( a man can only marry a Muslim, Christian, Sabeean or Jew) is not obligated to convert and many do not

Can a Muslim woman have many husbands?

No as she has no financial obligation to provide for a Husband.

The primary reason a man is permitted to have up to 4 wives it is supposed to be a social responsibility and a means to provide for women that are not capable of providing for themselves---Yes it does get misused and taking additional wives for personal gratification is not supposed to be done.

Is a Muslim woman free to choose not to wear a headdress of any kind while in public?

Before you point out Saudi and a few other countries.

a male is not permitted to force a woman to wear anything against her will. To be covered is supposed to be by the woman's own choice, if forced it has no religious significance and is not a free will sacrifice by the woman

Why is it that they are obligated to follow their husband's religion? Would this not be an immediate sign of inequality?

This leads into the question of why are women in no way ever obligated for financial responsibility?

In Islam both men and woman are obligated to be married if they are mentally, physically and financially able.
Marriage is considered a religious obligation for both men and women.
We consider marriage to be 1/2 of our worship.

We see marriage as a religious obligation. It is 1/2 of our worship

This leads into the question of why are women in no way ever obligated for financial responsibility?
The ruling is designed to protect a woman's wealth. typically a woman will buy gold jewelry. A man is not permitted to own or wear gold jewlry. This makes it very difficult for a man to marry a woman for her money.

But is she permitted by Islam to go without it?
It is Sunnah to wear it, a woman will receive blessings and rewards if she does so, of her own free will
Outside of Saudi and Iran it is not uncommon for Muslim women not to wear it. Although the majority do choose to do so. My wife would break my arm if I ever attempted to stop her from wearing her hijab.
