Do You Believe In War?

I remember the night that my wife and I attended the Yom HaShoah commemoration at the Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam - a deportation center used by the Nazis in 1942. The seating area was opened to the elements and it was a very dreary and rainy night. People sat there, mostly in blacks and greys, and shared umbrellas as they listened to speeches that we could not understand. Many, many of them were old; some were in wheelchairs. This was an audience of people remembering their past. And it was both moving and chilling to see these old men and women struggle to stand as the crowd began to sing a song commemorating the efforts of the Dutch Resistance.

As a side, what brought you to Amsterdam? I've been there twice and loved the place.

Dwelling in the Principle
War is a means, just like anything else. How it is executed, for what purpose and what kind of effect emerges from it is what defines war either bad or good. War can be waged to restore order, war can be waged to annex land, war can be waged to defend one's homeland, war can be waged to commit genocide.

In this respect, war is no different from a fork. You can use fork to eat food. You can also use it to stick someone in the eye.

Why or why not? Personally IMO we are a much too evolved species to not understand there are alternatives to extinction. What's your take?
You are right. Mankind has evolved. We have gone from this

If free will exists, then every person has an alternative they are capable of taking outside of unwarranted violence, in which case, almost all wars have little to no justification. There has never been much reason applied to it. If free will doesn't exist, which I suspect it doesn't, then beliefs and ethics won't really change the natural course of events, whatever they may turn out to be.

Yeah, warfare has gone from sticks to nukes. Nukes are really pushing the limits, but as technology advances so do weapons. The fact that one country has nukes, it's pretty much a necessity for all that are threatened at all to have nukes. You need to have MORE power than the one threatening you, or at least equal power. Many prefer the former though, making us continue advancement and becoming more and more of a threat every time a new mathematical statement becomes a fact!

I'm against war, but sadly humanity is still too primitive to move beyond the existence of war so sometimes it's necessary.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
War is hardwired. Not all people are the same making war inevitable by the way some people will think and act out on whatever crops up.

I detest war, but unfortunately it is a way of life for us humans. We are territorial critters that defend our turf, and we do what the chimps, bonobos, and gorillas do, so it seems to be in our genes.

In every animals genes I would say. War seems to be a constant of life (if it's not us it's our immune systems versus bacteria, viruses and at times our own bodies), humans are the only ones who seem to try to rationalize it.

I believe in the pragmatic adaptation to circumstances as they change. I also believe that the natural order of things sometimes results in survival being something that must be fought for. I also believe that being forced to kill another human being can be a traumatic and tragic thing to go through and live with. Basically, as with most things in life, I find what I "believe" about war would amount to less than a fart in the wind when faced with the actual circumstance of war happening.

And to add to that, as I learned the hard way, let me recommend not peeing out a campfire when standing downwind.

I hear people declare that they could never take another human life, under any circumstances. I sometimes ask what they will do when the rapist kicks in their front door as their daughter sleeps in a back room.

Them: Oh, I will bind the attacker's hands and call the authorities.

Me: Sorry, but there is no rope. You are in the middle of moving your household. The only items in your house are your daughter, her bed, and a handgun.

Them: Well, I will reason with the attacker.

Me: But the rapist is deaf. He's also high on PCP.

Them: Then I will try to knock him out with a blow to the head. That would be morally proper, I think.

Me: You're tried that already. He pushed you down and you broke your leg. You can't get up. There's nothing between him and your sleeping daughter except that handgun in your pocket. Do you use it or not?

Them: Oh, that could never happen! You are making up ridiculous, impossible stuff just to make me....!!!

Me, I'd just shoot the guy. Especially if it would make me shut up with all the damned hypotheticals.
