I do not believe in a God. However, I believe that many religious scriptures can condone (and encourage) violence and stupidity.

I know Arabic. The translation of the verse that Treks posted is very accurate, and the above verses are talking about a war. They are not talking about how to treat all non-Muslims. You are distorting their meaning and taking them out of context.
You should probably go read your own "holy texts" before criticizing anyone else's scriptures. I think you should read the Old Testament that is attached to every copy of the Bible if you want examples of barbarism and Iron Age savagery.

I must disagree with you: the Koran is not the only religious book which can incite violence, for example the Christian Old Testament promotes some aweful things.
Which religion do you currently belong to, Christianity?

If you want to understand the Quran and how to interpret it look at how the Holy Prophet Muhammad(peace and blessings be on him) behaved.
He DID NOT behave by beheading when he entered Meccah victoriously. He asked those he defeated how they wanted to be punished. They responded -punish us as the brothers of Prophet Joseph were punished - ie. forgiven. He forgave them.
No followers of the Holy Prophet(peace and blessings be on him) behaved as IS are reported to be behaving.
What we read and see on the media is appalling no civilised person can accept it. BUT remember Europe has gone through such brutality too. Have you studied the history of the African slave trade and the removal of millions of Africans to America. That was not civilised! It is a horrifying story of greed and disrespect of people different from oneself. The same motives driving IS to kill those who don't support them.
