Is the US importing eggs? Will there be tariffs on eggs?
No, the bird flu has been causing the egg prices to spike. But the blame was just more inflation dumped on Biden/Harris. They can't control the bird flu, but citizens are reactionary, and they don't seek to understand why things happen. The same thing will happen to Trump when his policies directly cause inflation.
Nah, eggs are safe, but your next smartphone, your next computer, your next (imported) car will cost double that of your last one. But petrol will still be cheap.
Right. Many cyclists I know are already buying parts and supplies because most all bikes and components are produced outside the USA. Bike shop owners I know are freaking out because bikes and parts are already very expensive. There will be shops closing, and sales will drop. The average road racing bike is about $12,000, and add 20% to that. The pandemic already caused alot of problems due to supply issues, and now a tariff? Many shops barely survived, and now this.

I'm planning to stock up on tires, tubes and chains just because I'm sure sure about the price hikes. Most stuff comes out of China.

The problem with a two party government is when one party controls all three branches of government their is less of a drive for oversight.
Unfortunately, Americans tend to go all out in support of their party despite the consequences.
Historically the party in power ends up losing the majority in the next election. Of course we have an honor system, and there has to be a "next election". Can we trust MAGAs? It remains to be seen.

Are you cool with that?
That is where manufacturers get many things produced. It's an option of that, or nothing. I ride Campagnolo components and they are made in Italy. My road bike is Swiss. My cross bike is Belgian. But tires and tubes, and chains, and other small parts for bikes are produced in China. Most frames are made in China and Taiwan. They have become experts in these products. Carbon fiber frames and rims and other parts are very time consuming, and needs specialty machines. China has all this set up. This will be bad luck for American bike shops and cyclists. We will have to vay 20-60% more for our products just because Trump has bad economic plans and wants a trade war.

The rest of the world will be OK.

So short term gain. What about long term?

This is vague. Be specific.
Do you want any of those manufacturing jobs to come back to America? Do you want the rest of them to also leave America? Do you want all car manufacturing plants to move to Mexico?
Do you worry if China takes advantage of our dependency on their products in any future (even minor conflicts)? Do you see China as a treat in any shape or form?

What part of Germany? My family lived north of Osnabruck back in the 17-18th centuries, and some are still there.
One of my sisters lives north of Osnabrück, I live about 70 km northeast of Osnabrück, about midway between Bremen and Hannover.

They could use forums for their advantage if they can limit the criticisms. The forums would die anyway. I think intimidation is more effective at the personal level, that's the best way to instill fear.
Intimidate the owners/staff of the forum to stifle criticism.
My neighbors are a gay couple and both have German ancestory, and they both got German passports just in case things get scary in the USA.
Useful.
This is what MAGA is doing to people, and they aren't even in power yet.
The fact that they are so eager makes me optimistic that they will go too fast and crash the whole thing.

Short term inflation. And with "short term" I mean several years to decades. It takes time (and money) to build up an industry. And it is very risky to bet on the stability of the tariffs. Secondly, even if things will eventually be manufactured in the US, they won't be as cheap as those from China. There's a reason the production went abroad. Only if you have people who work for Chinese wages, you can get Chinese prices.

Will there be any republicans who realize the danger of the Trump plan....
No.
They didn't vote for him based upon plans,
but rather how they felt about his promises.
Eg, they feel threatened by illegals, & he
inspired'm with promises of mass deportation.
But implementing this would be very costly &
slow because of necessary manpower, facilities,
legal efforts, & negotiation with their destination
countries. We an expect failure.

Trippin.

My great, great, great, great grandfather lived in a village called Sogeln which is about 8 kilometers northeast of Bramsche. I have a document of his daughter being Baptized in the Johannes Kirche in Bramsche in 1821.

That could happen. It’s a business and that can be leveraged.

That’s a good point. It will be a matter of whether the Trump voters hear about the negative consequences and give a ****. The die hard MAGAs will be happy with extremism.

I appreciate your response but I was waiting for @F1fan 's response as he is actually from here (USA). But I see he gave you a trophy - so maybe I am not getting a response.

In this particular case - I disagree with you because...

The buck must stop somewhere! Someone has to take the initiative to bring the manufacturing jobs back even if initially many things cost more and even if Chinese price tag is lower than our own products for foreseeable future.

That is the price we have to pay because we should have never let it get this bad!:(

Let me give you an example...

We went to Kuwait to help and kick Saddam out. Right?
Now, imagine we let our steel industry to die out and all the steel workers go to other fields and then years later China goes ballistic (not at us). China goes after a small nation and we decide to help (like we are helping Ukraine. We need steel to make tanks and guns and missiles. We make a special plea to china to supply us with some steel because we want to help the country they are attacking.

See the irony in that?
China is vastly invested many places - they have given loans to countries who can never pay it back - and those countries are not powerful like USA - those country may need protecting in some shape or form.
How and what will America do in such a scenario? Look the other way?

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
The republicans have the presidency and the senate. The House is yet to be decided and may take 2-3 weeks for the ballots to be counted. This is a critical outcome because if the democrats get the majority they could prevent Trump from doing many things, mostly with the budget. They could provide some guardrails to his actions until the midterm elections. If the republicans get the majority then there would be little in the way of MAGA putting project 2025 and Agenda 47 into action. Trump will largely have his way with everything, and immunity in his back pocket. They would have two years, and it's likely a complete abortion ban would be implemented. MAGA would have plenty of time to cut taxes on the wealthy, and grift the federal budget to benefit them while blowing up the budget.

What is your preference, and most importantly your reasons, and possible scenarios and consequences for your choice. Try to present an argument, not just your vote.
Truth be told if Republicans gain a foothold things would get done efficiently, but at risk of alienating the opposition. One time might be ok, but not if it's long term.

I'm never for a trifecta because a one party state almost always ends in disaster if it persists for too long.

It's like Yin losing Yang. No harmony results in imbalance, and the ship lists and sinks.

The struggle is what keeps things dynamic and alive.

And you think the people in the US are willing to wait for the products and the jobs to come back? As I said, it takes years, and Trump hasn't prepared the people for the increased prices and the long waiting period. He promised a simple and quick solution without drawbacks.
You can fool everyone once, and you can fool some people over and over, but can't fool everyone always.

Trump throws different things at you - to observe the reaction and then he eventually does the correct thing. It is an ingenious method to get feedbacks from foes & friends but many folks misunderstand and hate him for it. They hate him because they don't understand his methods.
We will see if he succeeds. Wait for it. Tariff can be used in an intelligent way. He has other plans. Wait for it!

This goes against the ideals of Republicans in favor of free markets. If the government is going to poke its nose into business and prices then it contradicts the core principles. Republicans need to decide what side of ‘Big Government “ they’re on.

As it is corporations can’t compete with imports that are cheaper. If tariffs remain permanently then the cost of products will be forever higher. And then American products are going to have to be better to be competitive and that will cost more money. Both in engineering and materials.

Conservatives have a very naive idea about manufacturing in the 21st century. Things are vastly more complicated and the expertise doesn’t exist. That means longer waits for buildings yo be designed, then built, then equipment bought or crested to manufacture the items. And then an educated and experienced workforce that doesn’t exist in the USA. We would likely have to hire foreigners to do much of the dedign and engineering work.

Trump will be dead before anything is made. And it assumes corporations are willing to spend the money.

That is the price we have to pay because we should have never let it get this bad!:(
Jobs were sent overseas by corporations, not the government. They did it for profit margins. You need to convince them.

China’s government invested in infrastructure and energy. The USA does only a fraction of what China does. Who’s going to pay for the infrastructure to ramp up manufacturing? The government under Trump looks to be facing bigger deficits. And austerity is Musk’s plan.

So you tell me. Where’s the money coming from?

The intelligent way to use tariffs is to set them at a reasonable rate, so that they don't hike up prices at once, and don't incite (too much) retribution. Then you don't pocket the money but subsidize your own industry until it is fit for competition.
Will Trump do that?

Honestly, I want the Republicans to have it all and to do all Donald Trump has said he wants to do. In my opinion it's the only way MAGA goes away. Will it cause the country and people problem, yes for sure but based on this election it's the only way people are going to learn. Sometimes you have to go backward to go forward.
I was thinking the same thing.

I kinda get that. But still. I just hope there's a way to stop things like P2025. I don't want to see anyone get hurt.

Yeah. Maybe this is what it's going to take. America needs to learn the hard way to not trust demagoguery.
The west coast AG's are ready. (Or so they say.)
