I've said this for years. They want to be American anyway. Then we'd only have a little border on the south... We could take out the cartels and solve illegal immigration in one fell swoop!

It is tragic that the issue of immigration has focused solely on the undocumented worker. No one has mentioned anything about a program to bring in needed labor from Mexico. A hysteria has gripped the nation and controls our minds.

The cartels represent supply. You forget about the voracious demand right here in the US. That is what is driving the supply. Annexing Mexico will make the drug problem much, much worse. The question you should be asking is why is there such a huge demand on the US side. There is a heroin epidemic right here in Albuquerque, New Mexico in our high schools. The cartels are utilizing high school students as drug runners from the border to the interior. The problem is much worse than you can imagine. Add to this the plethora of home-grown dangerous custom drugs, many of which keep the Wall St. crowd in drug heaven. So even without the cartel presence, we face a huge problem within the country.

In truth I have a very good understanding of the problem. I was speaking sarcastically, something I do frequently. Sometimes online it gets missed and for that I am sorry.

Personally I think the Mexico problem is our problem. I couldn't care less about the border. In an ideal world we would all be under one flag (this would also help us unite when the inevitable alien invasion occurs). But since we are not in that world, I think the solution should be more legal immigrants. We have record employment numbers and some of the lowest illegal immigration numbers I've ever witnessed.

This fixation on illegals walking over the border is pure hype. It is almost completely a manufactured crisis. Meanwhile our country has some serious problems that don't get touched. But building a wall is easy and it draws attention away from income inequality and our failing infrastructure (among other things).

I see it as providing a false sense of security. The problem is inside, not outside. Trump makes it worse as he is the type who blames everyone else for America's problems, while we rot internally. The issue of undocumented workers was totally fixable in the past, but is now a completely different problem as it is exacerbated by the drug problem. If you don't think it is an issue, just watch the series 'Border Patrol' to get an idea of the sheer volume of hard drugs coming across on a daily basis, with 'illegals' acting as mules. It is an epidemic. So, on top of the undocumented worker issue, we have a drug enforcement issue, as well as the problem of creating a viable program to hire immigrants for much needed labor, labor Americans don't want to do, or won't do. It's a mess that could have been addressed, in cooperation with the Mexican government years ago. But we let it fester until it is what it now is. Add to this the ongoing racism against the Mexican people, and you have an impasse. From my POV, America is now paying the karmic price for past injustices, and will continue to pay through the nose until we pay serious attention.

As for our 'failing infrastructure', we are already up to our ears in debt, and the wars, interior troubles, and the border and drug issues will end up bankrupting us to the point where we will be unable to fix that infrastructure. Obama was on the right track in first shoring up the economy, which saved it from immediate collapse. But the current administration is busy as a bee dismantling everything that he put in place. From their POV, a black man could not possibly have done anything right. Only a real 'take charge' white hombre like Trump, LOL, can fix things. Bull effing sh*t!

Plus make all American citizens who make under 100K income tax exempt. That will put nickels and dimes into everyone's pockets across the USA and stimulate the economy. Then make the Fed government earn its keep by nationalizing banks, agriculture, airlines, etc while keeping private industry for the higher priced goods.

Okay but drug cartels are the least likely to be impacted by a wall. They have the means to go over it, around it, under it or threw it. Putting up a 6 foot thick wall, sunk 12 feet in the ground, surrounded by mines and a moat, might work. Even then it won't work without manning it both physically and/or electronically.

And these shows document highlights. In other words the moments when things are worst. I don't claim there isn't a problem, but that it is the smallest it has ever been.

You are preaching to the choir on this. The tax cuts and deregulation make for quick growth but make it increasingly unstable. Many experts are now saying we are headed for another recession that could be a full blown depression. And Trumps policies have made traditional methods of staving that off nearly impossible.

The cartels won't be affected by the wall at all. They'll dig right under it. The wall is a waste of money because we already have a wall. And the border has been secure/protected for a while now.

granted .....I have worked alongside imported labor

for the most part they are polite and friendly
earning their keep by the sweat of their brow

but what if they were able as much in their homeland?

and how is it?.....they claim to flee corruption and crime?

seems American intervention would be the way to go

move in.....take over.....install a better system

would be the 'neighborly' thing to do

then they can join our tax system!!!!!

OMG! Are you that naive?

Are you aware that when NAFTA was launched, American corn growers dumped tons of cheap American corn on the Mexican market, driving the indio corn growers out of business, and displacing some 2 million workers? Where do you think they went in search of work? Yup! North, across the border. Under NAFTA, Monsanto Corp introduced their patented killer corn seeds into Mexico, destroying some 18 of the 20 or so native corn varieties, killing off yet more of the Mexican corn industry, forcing corn growers to grow other types of crops. Under NAFTA, the Mexican government pulled the rug out from Mayan Indians, who had previously been given homestead rights to the land. These lands were then sold to rich American corporations.

America is not Mexico's friend. Hard-wired into our brains is the 'Remember the Alamo' mentality, and revenge is the motive for our 'relations' with Mexico. Anything the US does will be to take advantage of Mexico. Making Mexico a state will enslave the Mexican people in more ways than one. Mexico is rich in natural resources and especially tourism with miles and miles of tropical coastline. Do you think for a moment that we don't covet those resources for our own benefit? Yes, we would love nothing more than to 'take over' and subjugate the Mexican people to even more hardship and 'The American Way', just as we did to some degree in the Mediterranean area, which had the healthiest diet in the world, and in which colon cancer is now skyrocketing due to the introduction of American fast foods. Did you know that the Mexican national, upon arriving into the US, has a healthier diet than the average American, due to their greater consumption of fruits and vegetables? And that after a period of time in the US, develop diabetes, now an epidemic amongst Latinos in the Los Angeles area?

No, I say Mexico needs to protect her people from the dangers that an American economy entails. Unfortunately, much of the damage is already done, but which can be reversed.

US out of Mexico and the rest of South America!

how sure of this are you?

anyone got numbers the people that cross per day?
Yes, our borders are secure. We have a border patrol that monitors it. Been that way for a long time.

I understand that Fox tells people the borders are wide open and no one cares who comes over. And that those evil democrats want open borders while republicans want patrolled borders.

Everyone wants patrolled borders.

No, Mexico suffered our intrusion. Are you not aware of the cause of the Mexican-American War, and why it was fought? It was over slavery:

"The U.S. War on Mexico was inevitable because Mexican officials absolutely refused to sell their northern territory despite repeated offers by the United States to buy it. Once the leaders of the U.S. finally understood that the Mexican people would never sell their birthright in North America, they were committed to war and sought a pretext to justify their aggression. Although Jackson's "disputed" territory strategy failed in Texas in 1836, President Polk employed it to create a pretext for war in 1846. The "disputed" territory this time was the 145-kilometer (90 mile) wide strip of land between the Nueces River and Rio Grande in south Texas.

Historically, the Nueces, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico at Corpus Christi, was the northern border of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. President Polk urged the Republic of Texas to claim the Rio Grande, which runs south and roughly parallel to the Nueces and empties into the Gulf at Matamoros, as its southern boundary. Polk knew that Mexico would go to war over the annexation of Texas, and dispatched U.S troops under the command of General Zachary Taylor to Corpus Christi on the edge of the "disputed" territory. In his Personal Memoirs, Grant explained the mission of the U.S. Army in south Texas, "We were sent to provoke a fight, but it was essential that Mexico should commence it." The plan worked. The U.S. annexed Texas in February of 1846, and Polk immediately ordered Taylor to proceed to the Rio Grande. One of Taylor's patrols skirmished with a Mexican detachment and lost over twenty soldiers, including eleven dead, five wounded, and several captured. Polk immediately called for war. In his bellicose message to the U.S. Congress, the President announced that, "American blood had been shed upon American soil." He got his declaration of war."

the American way is creating more poverty here.....even as I post

so what?

if the people of the south want what we have......they will keep crossing the border

help them to be like us in their own land
and we can be better neighors

but the economics will be led by us
and the law of that scheme led by us
and the taxation will be led by us

but they will have what they want.......at home

Why would Mexicans want heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, mental illness, school shootings, child kidnappings, higher taxes and land prices to drive them out of their neighborhoods to impoverish them even more, etc. They have enough problems with the cartels. They don't need an overlord to run their country. Much of their problems already stem from our economic intervention and control. One estimate I heard from a savvy Mexican is that the US controls over 70% of the Mexican economy. The American government has a bad attitude toward Mexico. Continuing mistreatment of the Mexican people would ensue if we made them a state. We have driven a wedge between Mexican businessmen who are fooled by the false promise of prosperity under NAFTA and the indigenous people, who see the dangers. The Mexican businessmen think the Indios are backward and ignorant, while the Indios see the businessmen as foolish. What the Mexican people need is land reform and more socialist programs like nationalized farming, oil, airlines, railroads, banks, etc,, as well as a healthy capitalist system for some things.
