Children to stop getting puberty blockers at gender identity clinics, says NHS England

Children to stop getting puberty blockers at gender identity clinics, says NHS England

Children who have gender dysphoria will no longer be given puberty blockers, NHS England has said, ahead of a radical change in how it cares for them.

There is not enough evidence about either how safe they are to take or whether they are clinically effective to justify prescribing them to children and young people who are transitioning, it added.

The government welcomed NHS England’s “landmark decision”, which it said was “in the best interests of children”.

Sorry. I posted this before seeing there was an active thread about this.

Wise move. I remember Senator Kennedy saying something to the effect that gender dysphoria is actually quite rare. Most cases are simply gender confusion and drugging up kids is never a good idea particularly with something so powerful and altering as puberty blockers.

and just what qualifies him to make these claims?
All the clinic hours spent getting the multiple degrees in medicine and gender specific studies.
I mean, seriously, why would someone who does not know their arse from a hole in the ground when comes to medicine make such blatantly medical related claims without first knowing something about it.

Oh wait...
He is a politician.

Never mind..

The thing is they are not and there is significant evidence that these medications can help trans youth cope and have time to work with qualified therapists.
As far as I know, all the recent meta-studies have shown that there is no high quality evidence that these drugs improve the mental health outcomes for kids with GD or kids who think they are trans.

If you can cite high quality evidence, please do so, and while you're at it, send the links to the NHS, they've been looking for four years now!

if you are referring to the Cass review you might want to look into it a bit. Cass looked at 25 studies on puberty blockers but rejected over 150 studies. The main reason given for rejecting the studies was what she called small sample size yet the average sample size of the studies she used was much lower than the average sample size from the studies she rejected. It seems she selected studies to review based on the result of the studies.

The author, Cass actively collaborated with members of the Republican party in the US prior to releasing this report, and that some of it's recommendations were word for word copies of the junk science the Florida Department of Health put out.

That stated the evidence about puberty blockers was untrustworthy because most people put on them decide to go for HRT down the line. Why that makes the results untrustworthy is anyone's guess.

Cass actively argued against banning conversion therapy in the UK, fearful it will ban an exploratory approach. She favors Gender Exploration Therapy, a relatively new type of conversion therapy which looks for any other cause for why someone is trans. IT's a stalling tactic designed to constantly delaying the patient from receiving treatment.

That stated that gendered toys like trucks for boys and dolls for girls have a biological basis.

That claims that even for people aged 18-25 should stay on the youth service, because their brain hasn't finished developing, sighting reasons that they might 'change their mind.' - This argument has been used against children, but notice the age creep. Now, we are talking about full-grown adults who have a right to bodily autonomy.

That dismissed over 100 studies on the efficacy of transgender care as not suitably high quality, applying standards that are unattainable and not required of most other pediatric medicine. This includes standards like blinding and controls, which (Regardless of the ethical concerns) is impossible to conduct since you can't give placebo hormones and puberty blockers. The studies she did include did not differ from her rejected studies in this area.

Cass sights research from widely debunked and retracted scholars, including Lisa Littman and her theory of “rapid-onset gender dysphoria.” So she decided to see if she could find out more about kids like these, who seemed to be coming out “all of a sudden.” But rather than ask the youth themselves about why they wished to transition, Littman decided to exclusively survey parents. And not just any parents—but primarily parents who frequented online anti-trans forums.

@Argentbear - Quite a few countries in Europe are taking action to strongly curtail the use of WPATH's SOC (GAC), based on the Cass review and similar meta-studies showing that there is no good evidence for the current GAC protocols. You might also want to review the WPATH files which confirm that WPATH, the organization that has championed GAC for years now, is guilty of bad practices, such as often not getting informed consent, and often experimenting on patients.

As for high quality standards, I think we ought to stick with "first, do no harm".

And frankly, I think the actions of these countries in Europe, and the thousands of cases they've dealt with are far more credible than you.

And my request still stands, where is the high quality data to show that GAC is effective?

Puberty is a transitional time between childhood and adulthood. If we give children puberty blockers, don't we stop their natural physical, emotional and psychological development at childhood? They are called puberty blockers for a reason. Children like to play dress up and games of make believe. If the same children were to stop taking puberty blockers, and they were to grow up; mature naturally, is the political Left and Big Med/Pharm afraid these young adults will become independent and harder to brain wash? Make believe is less tolerated when you are an adult, except in private. While private adults do not form a political army of needy children.

There may be some natural trans people, but when you have an induced trans fad among children, driven by adults and schools, perpetuated by meds; puberty blockers, there will be lingering copycat behavior, so the children can please the adults and be part of the fad; pet rock. This is the main pitfall of casino science being used in the health and medical industries. They cannot effectively target genuine need, but need to saturation bomb, and in doing so, harm many others with their friendly fire.

Interestingly the same crowd that pushes this, also pushes man made climate change, and it too uses saturation bomb solutions, harming many with friendly fire; another layer of black box science. Maybe these leaders need to get off puberty blockers and grow up. Adulthood is about reality check and compromises, and not black box, Big Bother one size fits all.

Do puberty blockers and perpetual childhood, help you play the game of man made climate change, instead of the seeing the reality of natural climate change? Nature has a dozen way to do this, while manmade has CO2, which is a one trick pony. Water, alone has a dozen tricks and goes all the way to the center of the earth, impacting earth core dynamics, which impacts the surface.
