seems many think they are entitled and owed several things.
The word has a neutral meaning - things we've earned or which have been set aside for us - but today, is often used in a deprecatory sense in reference to people who believe that others owe them just because they want something and somebody else can afford or provide it, or expect others to pick up after them. I'm talking about people that cut in lines, yell at employees, steal food at work, don't return shopping carts, and the like. I doubt that too many such people would describe themselves as entitled.
Respect like many things is earned
The word is also used in at least two different ways. Only one is earned respect, generally earned by what a person does or has done that others admire. But there's also what can be called forbearance, or respecting another person's right to being tolerated and treated kindly - essentially the right to exist. That's something we start out with, but can forfeit following bad behavior.
