"A $130,000 payment by President Donald Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen to the adult-film actress Stormy Daniels may have amounted to an illegal contribution to the Trump campaign, according to Trevor Potter, a former chairman of the Federal Election Commission.

Cohen has acknowledged using his personal money to pay Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. She has said the payment was designed to keep her from sharing details of an affair she says she had with Trump in 2006. Cohen has said he was not reimbursed for the payment, which was made 11 days before the 2016 US presidential election. He has also denied that Trump had an affair with Daniels.

But Potter, who was appointed to the FEC by President George H.W. Bush, told Anderson Cooper in a "60 Minutes" interview that aired last month that Cohen's payment may have violated campaign-finance laws, which the special counsel Robert Mueller could use in his mounting case against the president.

"The payment of the money just creates an enormous legal mess for, I think, Trump, for Cohen, and anyone else who was involved in this in the campaign," Potter said.

Potter said what he described as Cohen's "hush money" to Daniels could be considered an "in-kind contribution by Cohen to the Trump campaign, which is about $126,500 above what he's allowed to give."

On Monday, the FBI raided Cohen's Manhattan office and seized documents connected to his payment to Clifford. The raid came after a referral from Mueller's office, according to Cohen's lawyer.

If Cohen is claiming to have made the transaction on behalf of his friend and longtime client Trump, the situation could be seen by Mueller and those investigating the Trump campaign as a "coordinated, illegal, in-kind contribution by Cohen for the purpose of influencing the election," Potter said, adding that it didn't matter whether Trump paid Cohen back at a later time.

"If he was then reimbursed by the president, that doesn't remove the fact that the initial payment violated Cohen's contribution limits," Potter said."

Oh well, Trevor Potter has an opinion. That’s different. The one who is buddies with G. H. W. Bush and McCain, both hostile to Trump. And Even though he has no direct knowledge on this particular case. Do you know what the “appeal to authority” logical fallacy means?

I never said anyone was going to jail over this. So we agree about that. A fine, disbarment perhaps. And it might be part of the impeachment charge.
Hardly the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors”, plus the Republican House would not charge him (assuming they retain control of the House), plus the Republicans in the Senate would never convict him (again assuming they retain control). Even in the unlikely case of the Democrats gain control of both houses of Congress Trump will run out the clock before he would ever be impeached.

Well there's news now that more Republicans then Ryan will be quiting. Some Republicans have reported they would not mind losing control of the house. They do not want to go down with the ship.

Oh yea and NBC says Mueller doesn't need Trump to sit down with him to go forward with his investigation and says there are 4 findings. Theres 4 obstructuion findings and they will probably go forward with it before May or June this year.

Oh, the “obvious” argument. I haven’t “attacked” a porn star. She has opened herself to scrutiny by making public accusations and statements. There is no evidence Trump is “a lying incompetent racist”. You are demonstrating an “obvious” bias against Trump.

Actually you did. Re-read your post. And I already supplied evidence that Trump is a lying incompetent cheat for another. No obvious bias on my part.

Unlike Trump supporters I can and have supported my claims.

Yes, it means that you do not know how to apply logical fallacies.

Thank you. I hadn't seen that. (I haven't kept up with either of these cases.) I wonder if Cohen's plan to answer no questions and seek an emergency stay in the defamation suit is all kind of sudden and because of something found in the search?

(I must say I find Mr. Avenatti distractingly hot. I'd answer his questions.)
Pretty good questions I've wondered. My take is that Cohens actions have been rather spontaneous like creating a shell corporation to pay off someone and suddenly pleading the fifth when the whole time he should have been very silent on the matter is all just random.

Mr Avenatti must be doing pretty good representing the likes of Storm. :)

Your reference actually didn’t prove your point. It is based on two anonymous sources giving hearsay opinions about an ongoing confidential investigation, which are not worth much. In other words it did not confirm that Mueller has evidence that Cohen was in Prague, but it does prove your citation uses unreliable sources in its reporting. It also proves my own point where I previously wrote “The reports are based on innuendo, opinions and anonymous leaks.” Thanks.
