"Faith is the adult version of the childhood game 'Let's Pretend'"

I was recently told, "Faith is the adult version of the childhood game 'Let's Pretend'". In what way, if any, is that true? In what way, if any, is that false?

Well I don't really see much in common between the two, so your questions are hard to answer.

It's like asking people to compare buying plane tickets with eating salad. There just isn't much of a basis on which to discuss comparisons.

Can you elaborate a bit? How would you define the difference between the two?

I assume this game is basically just kids making up a role-play type scenario as they go?

Yes, that's a fairly good description of "Let's Pretend", although I've read some psychology on the subject that sees the game in a more profound light. For instance, some psychologists see it in terms of learning. They believe that games of Let's Pretend can be ways in which children learn about themselves, others, and so forth.

Other psychologists have noted how real the pretend roles can become for the participants. That is, the participants can sometimes get lost, so to speak, in the roles and behave in ways that seem to indicate they think their game is real.

Good response!

This game and faith would be similar on the psychological level, then?
People get so far gone in their belief in something that they don't really question it normally.

You seem to have a fair amount of faith that there's no God, Sunstone, are you just pretending??

I think that might be true of some people, but that it would be difficult to characterize all faith as a game of Let's Pretend.

Oh, I don't know. I guess for many people it is like a game.
I find that incredibly disrespectful for our friends with faith.
They're not pretending or playing a game. To them it's real.
You shouldn't mock their very serious & dangerous delusions.

Well they just don't have anything in particular in common. They'd have to be similar but differ in key ways for me to define the difference.

Faith is a dynamic experience of the divine and a conviction of that which is greater than you, sometimes with attached narratives. The other is a role-playing game.

I think there can be an element of play or gaming in just about everything humans do. Which would beg the question of whether faith is anymore play or gaming than anything else we do?
