Fave Anime

Sword Art Online is an example of how not to make an anime or TV show. It literally finds ways to kill suspense and did so in the first episode. Very few animes amuse me because I dislike drama yet alone socializing. It becomes very hard to get interested in the life of a fictional character when I cannot even get interest in the life of a real person.

I don't think I got past episode 10 of SAO and the first half is apparently the best half of the show.

If you guys are talking about the second season of SAO, then I too see the first episodes are kinda dull, boring and slow. As for the first season, the first half is what counts as the best as it shows how the story develops. The ending was worth it too and made sense and was satisfactory. Not the ending fight, but the ending act/scene.

You might want to try aldnoah zero. I've only seen one episode but it looks like it could be amazing and the composer is the same person who did attack on titans soundtrack

Thanks for the recommendation.

I came across it actually, but didn't watch it as the story synopsis and the genre turned me off. Mecha is my end-of-the-list genre. I always check those as I look for specific genres and details for my material.

But I'll give it a try since you recommended it.

I'm catching up on Dragon Ball. Man, marathoning that one really makes me feel just so good. It's such a HAPPY show!

If you're talking about Z, then I recommend the remastered version. It has both Jap./Eng. dubbing, both Jap./Eng. soundtracks (yeah) and the full original Jap. episodes with Funimation fill-up-the-blanks Eng. Dubbing.

One of the very few anime with good English dubbing and the remade Funimation sound track is great for my taste.

The only problem (for me at least) is the top-bottom hard cropping to make a widescreen aspect ration (16:9) just like the new reboot version. Cuts a little from the original picture.

...am I the only one who found Vampire Hunter D dull?

No Sir... well, kinda. I find the first movie dull but the second movie vivid and full of action.

So many people like DBZ. Am I the only one who thinks that it's way too long, drawn out, and just flat out boring?

Personally, I think Yu-Yu Hakusho is what DBZ should have been like. Little to no filler, the right amount of action, a set amount of episodes (only 112 episodes long), and actually entertaining.

I was talking about plain ol' Dragon Ball. I haven't gotten to Z, yet. I've only seen parts of the various Z sagas, and looking at the two side-by-side, Z, while still a great anime, isn't quite as happy.

The Dragon Ball franchise is actually the only instance I've found in anime where I actually prefer Funimation's (uncut) dub to the original Japanese.

Didn't even know there was a second movie. Huh.

A very understandable sentiment. (Dragon Ball doesn't suffer from that as much, though.)

That's why TeamFourStar made an EXCELLENT abridged parody series on youtube.

Yeah, Z is more mature and tense as Goku became an adult. Definitely not as happy.

The second movie is called Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust. If you wan happy anime only, then I see it is not good for you. It is violent, somewhat like Ninja Scroll the movie, another crazy action movie.

Well, I didn't much care for Ninja Scroll, either.

It's not that I only want happy anime. Death Note is one of my all-time favorites, and I actually did like that Rurouni Kenshin prequel (the first half, anyway). I just prefer happy.

Oh ! Oh ! Then you'll adore Howl's Moving Castle, yes.

Again, IT'S MIYAZAKI! :p

Saw it in theaters, loved it. ^_^

Heck, Castle in the Sky is one of my favorite animes of all time, followed very closely by Kiki's Delivery Service. (...which, come to think of it, I don't actually have. :()

I think the only one of his more well-known films that I haven't seen is Nausica.

...heck, on the subject of good dark animes, a lot of American animes are really good at being dark (if in a slightly child-friendly fashion). But I doubt those animes are the topic of this thread's discussion. ^_^

Nausicaa is a gorgeous film. Its soundtrack even more.

I totally agree that DBZ is way too long, drawn out, too many flashbacks, and too much fillers and extras that are non-essential to the plot.

The Dragon Ball franchise is actually the only instance I've found in anime where I actually prefer Funimation's (uncut) dub to the original Japanese.
It's the only anime I've found don't like the Japanese voice actors that well but mostly like the English ones.

Funny thing is, if you think the American version is like that, apparently the Japanese version is even worse. Many of the original Japanese episodes were actually merged into one episode for the original dub, just to cut it down a bit.

DB Kai tried to remedy this by cutting a lot of the fat out and making it follow the pacing of the manga a bit better, but I understand they actually went too far, and ended up removing a lot of the atmosphere, tension, character development (THE reason I watch the show at all), and buildup to powerful attacks.

I've never seen the original Japanese, I have seen Kai, and it sucks. For awhile it seems cool, and going much closer to the manga, then it starts cutting out things that shouldn't have been, and some of the different voices are alright, but the new Freeza deflates the character. The character development is much weaker, and you aren't left with a sense of knowing the characters and what really drives them. It's not as bad as the sped up Death Note, but it still lacks alot of what made DBZ good.

Yeah, I feel like DBZ was too drawn out. The whole formula is: super powerful enemy appears!; lets fight it!; we lost the fight!; lets train!; fight again!; we beat it!; rinse and repeat.

It was especially bad with the Buu saga: (cycle through above formula); he's still too powerful, let's train even more!; still too powerful! More training!; like five people have died trying to kill this thing! Let's fuse our bodies together, it'll totally work! Look how powerful we are now!; we still failed and he's even stronger now! What do??

tldr; Cell Saga X9000

I don't even remember how it ended. Still, as a kid, I enjoyed DBZ. The main value for me now is nostalgia. I think Dragon Ball is better and I think i'Ive heard that the creator wasn't so much a fan of DBZ. Dragon ball had other elements while DBZ focused almost solely on absurdly long fights with really powerful bad guys bent on world domination/destruction.

He was originally done after Freeza for the most part, but he was pressured to keep on going, which is why suddenly there was an "ascended" sayan. He finally pleaded exhaustion by the Buu saga. And it was either last year or the year before the creator, Akira Toriyama, made his first Dragon Ball Z movie in several years, Battle of the Gods.

I love DBZ Abridged! It hasn't disappointed so far.

I actually liked the Sailor Moon Abridged that was on Youtube (the one made by Megami 33, voice of DBZ Abridged Bulma), before it stopped being interesting around it's 2nd season.

Yeah, the Freiza thing sounds familiar.

Speaking of movies, that reminds me: I never saw any of the Broly movies but, where the hell does that stuff fit in the canon?

My circle of friends considers the series basically over after the Cell Saga. At that point, Gohan's growth and arc is basically complete. Ending it there means we can just ignore his days as a high school dork.

The series ended IMO stupidly. The last three episodes take place about ten years after Buu is finally defeated, and now reincarnated in the character of Uub: a nice kid who's forgotten his past life. It takes place in the World Martial Arts Tournament, and Goku fights him, suspecting that it's Buu reincarnated. They fight, Goku wins, and agrees to train Uub. They fly off, episode ends. It's stupid.

The ONLY redeeming factor of those last three episodes is the introduction of Pan, Gohan and Videl's 4-year-old child. SHE'S SO CUUUUUUUUUUUTE!!! :D

Sailor Mars as a screaming emo Satanist = AWESOME!

Dude, trust me: do not try fitting a single one of the movies into the canon. You'll only give yourself a headache.

It is also unfortunate that action in anime is not as fluid and accurate as that of American anime (maybe because of the budget?). For good action, I seek new DC Warner Bros movies. They also broke the child-friendly fashion. Now they do blood, killing and bad language to an obvious level. Honestly, for me they beat anime most of the time in action.

Seems off-topic, but anime actually means animation in Japanese. Although the talk was all so far only about Japanese anime, the title and the OP still don't mention so.

Then again, when we say anime it comes to the mind Japanese anime... so yeah... or maybe no... dunno
