Florida governor DeSantis says recreational pot and abortion are too radical

It Aint Necessarily So

Republicans in Florida failed to prevent Floridian voters from deciding if they wanted state constitutional amendments protecting abortion rights to 24 weeks and recreational marijuana, which the governor calls too radical and extreme for Florida. From https://www.politico.com/news/2024/04/04/desantis-abortion-marijuana-ballot-initiatives-00150616 :

"Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis predicted Thursday that two initiatives dealing with abortion rights and recreational marijuana will fail at the ballot box this November once voters become aware of the “radical” elements included in the two measures. The remarks made by DeSantis are his first public comments on the initiatives since the state Supreme Court allowed the proposed constitutional amendments to go forward."

"“Once voters figure out how radical both of those are they’re going to fail,” DeSantis said following a bill signing ceremony held in Davie. “They are very, very extreme.”"

"DeSantis also took aim at the measure that would permit recreational marijuana, suggesting in his comments that it would open to a proliferation of marijuana stores that could operate when and wherever they wanted. “This state will start to smell like marijuana in our cities and towns,” DeSantis said. “It will reduce the quality of life.”"

Not that marijuana retail outlets would be unregulated, but DeSantis objects to being able to operate when and where one wants. It's always interesting when they say things like that out loud.

Add these to the list of other freedoms the Republicans in Florida object to such as teaching DEI and CRT, "don't say gay," and banned books.

Nevertheless, DeSantis says, "Florida has become the citadel of freedom because we never cave to the woke mob." Also, he has a book out on freedom:

I'm sure the leftests will fall behind DeSantis.

I mean look at what the left did to tobacco smokers. All that second hand smoke and all.

Pot deserves the same treatment.

Not likely. A person can make the choice to indulge in something without impacting others. I don't want to have to breath in another person's carcinogens just because they want to indulge in a restaurant, but I want them to make that same choice for themselves.

Typical authoritarian republican. He knows better than the people of Florida do about what is too radical for them. Even though early abortion has been available to them for the last 60 years, until the republicans stacked the court and banned it. And even though legalized pot has been available to half the country for decades now with no particular difficulties.

That's democracy for you.
The people of Florida can always vote out DeSantis if they don't like he policies.

Most laws end up restricting someone's freedom.

The people of Florida do not have the right to decide the rights of their fellow Floridians. That's just the tyranny of a majority over the minority. Our rights were set forth in our founding documents and specifically meant to be protected from the whims of the majority or the powerful few. It's the whole reason we are a democratic republic and not a democracy.

That's true. It's the will of the people. Not the will of a few.

Sure there are protections of minorities in the constitution however there also exists protections for the states against Federalism.

False equivalence

There's a difference with having the freedom to even smoke weed or purchase it at all legally vs. being able to smoke weed in all the places you aren't allowed to smoke tobacco in currently. You know this

Even in states where it's legal to purchase and consume weed, it's limited even more strictly than tobacco on where it can be smoked. For instance, in my state it's illegal to smoke weed in public - similar to drinking in public

Pot deserves the same treatment.

Ehhh... At a minimum. It's a different substance than tobacco and deserves to be treated with this in mind. That said, people should be free to smoke weed without issue within the privacy of their own homes, imo

State protections were only meant to relate to their geographical and economic peculiarities. NOT to their sub-cultural moral proclivities. We fought a civil war over this, and the union prevailed. As it must.

Maybe it's high time to end the extraordinary tax on tobacco or put that same extraordinary tax on weed as well.

Otherwise it's not false equivalence as you might think it is.

No one stacked the court, Republicans nominated and confirmed justices per the constitution. And again no, the supreme court did not ban abortion.
