God/Yahweh/Allah I BELIEVE started as volcanic activity

I believe god/yahweh/allah started out as volcanic activity. Please discuss this with me. Anything I say will be in my own words unless clearly stated with links to the original source. Please ask anything you want.

I think this is just way, way too simplistic. Religions, once you get into them, can be rather deep. It is much more than just "believing in God", it is also having a path to either God or to a higher understanding of your spirit (there are non-theistic religions).

Why is it a logical conclusion that the entire Abrahamic faith is false because it takes some of its source material from primitive peoples who believed in volcano gods? How does one negate the other? This is what I meant by "its too easy". You're picking out one aspect of a complex system, identifying it as false, then declaring the entire system as false. Sorry, its not that simple. You might as well say that the entire Abrahamic faith is false because you noticed that the Christmas celebration actually originated in the Norse tradition of Yule.

A religion based on a human error is never going to be anything other than an elaborated human error. I am not picking one small element. The start of Judiasm, Exodus, demonstrates very clearly the fact the Hebrews left Eqypt in order to travel to a place where it would be possible to worship Yahweh. It was not possible to do that in Egypt. The susequent stories describe, I believe, people congregating around the base of a volcano, sacrificing animals to the volcano and being in awe and wonder of the volcano, that volcano being Mount Sinai, which I believe is not in the location we are told it is in. The Bible also describes the Hebrews travelling from one volcano to the next and witnessing volcanic activity. This would only become apparent if you read the verses I have, read the stories in the OT and picture the scene based on my theory. Then you will have to make your own mind up as to whether or not you feel it is a sound theory.

I am not aware of any mention of Christmas trees in the Bible.

Ezekiel 22:31 So I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done, declares the Sovereign LORD."

Daniel 7:10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

Note....'fiery finger'......lava river?

Like I said, too easy. This is an all encompassing statement. All religion is based on human error. We perceive God as best we can at the level of comprehension we have achieved at any given point in history. Primitive man was unable to perceive beyond worshipping volcanos and so made an error and you say that proves all religion is wrong. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I think we as developed and intelligent beings are capable of finding something, if there is anything, higher up in a better way than believing in something that, I believe, is based on a primitive misinterpretation.

In marketing there is a saying, 'Keep it simple stupid' to remind marketing people to create campaigns that are so simple even stupid people could understand. Conversely, 'Keep it complex clever' would result in a campaign that was so complex even clever people would struggle to work out its meaning.

It might be complex now but that does not mean it had complex origins. Sometimes the most incredibly complex problems can be solved with the most basic solution and the realisation of that can be mind blowing.

Lamentations 4:11 The LORD has given full vent to his wrath; he has poured out his fierce anger. He kindled a fire in Zion that consumed her foundations.

Ezekiel 7:8 I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you; I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices.

Note....'poured out'

Thanks for letting me know about the verse posting. I will post two verses at the end of each of my posts from now on. I hope that does not infringe any rules. Please assume they are all from the Bible.
No problem. :)

Have you read Freud's book?
I haven't. I meant I'd seen the Wikipedia information on it.
Have you?
If so, please give us a run down. Perhaps one or two paragraphs to explain how you think it relates.

You asked me to check the specific rules but didn't know which I'd breached? The text in my original thread was all my own work.
It may have been deemed spam. (Lots of text looks spammy after all)

I can't tell you for sure, though, as it's up to the mods. Even if I knew, I would not be able to discuss it, as Rule 2 explicitly prohibits the discussion of moderation.

What is the Hebrew? It may not be quite "poured out" after all.

Even so, even if these are appearances of the Abrahamic God are shown in common with volcanoes, it does not mean that the people worshipped a volcano. Even if it was a GOD of volcanoes, it still would not mean the people worshipped a volcano.

And especially now, it would not mean the same thing.

You are also forgetting that religions are written in languages, and languages use metaphors. Religions use mythology, fables, idioms, and even anthromorphisms to explain things to people.

Why is it that monotheism has to be equated to the Bible? The Bible is not superior to other Scriptures, and neither is it the oldest expression of monotheism.

I love the Bible because I grew up with it, but I consider it poetic literature and spiritual narration that has less significance in my spiritual life than the Vedic literatures.

No offense, but this just smacks of complete ignorance of other religious conceptions in favour of one Scripture and one tradition. Vishnu or Krishna is not a violent 'volcano' God, that's for sure!

I think that is because more people here are familiar with the Bible than other religions holy books. It is a good idea to try and remind people there are other religions and faiths and other holy books.

Every time we do, we're dismissed.
I guess mocking Dharmic religions isn't as fun. :D

It must be very tiring to keep reminded people of something so obvious.
Oh it is. Very, very tiring.
One of the times I made a thread about such things, I was accused of "throwing a temper tantrum because people don't want to play with my toys".

And considering we have the internet at our fingers, even Wikipedia -- the lack of understanding of some people of religions, and still perpetuating inaccuracies of religions, is surprisingly staggering.

I know! And it's a chore to have to revert back to the Bible to explain religious points. I mean, I could quote endless verses of the Bible because I was taught to memorise parts of the Bible mainly for apologetics...

But when we live in a world of literature and information, it's silly to be unknowledgeable of even the most rudimentary knowledge of a spiritual tradition.

If he can find some Volcanic activity in the Gita, I would be very intrigued, lol.

I'm not here to discuss your religion. I'm here to discuss what the Hebrews were worshipping in Exodus. Sorry if that offends you.
