Gods of Hinduism

So true, and a nice reminder to understand your audience before rattling off. Does the physics professor tack Kindergarten about physics?

I wouldn't say it is entirely that bad though. He got the answers he needed for his research topic and also go the deeper ones that may benefit him later in life if he finds himself attracted. Besides people then took the thread and began having their own conversations about belief ,Gods, and spirituality. Which I think is good because hopefully he will remember this and somewhere mention somewhere in his research that us Hindus are a diverse bunch and getting one basic answer probably won't happen.

But yes sometimes I think we can get carried away and forget that some times people just want your basic intellectual answer. The mystical/philosophical "stuff" is GREAT for worship and religion. BAD for research and intellectual study, which all they would probably except in a college course.

I wonder where the OP has gone...

Oh, I'm still here.

I thank everybody for their replies! :) (I'm too busy to reply to everyone individually.)

All of the replies are being read, even those which don't specially address me at the moment. It's all appreciated, though. All of this does give me a greater appreciation for the complexity of Hinduism. I'm looking forward to reading/learning more...

Namaste. No problem.

Don't try and read too much into my replies though. They are not 'typically Hindu'...for you see, I am still trying to 'pigeonhole' myself somewhere.

I am at the point where Tantric Shaivism, Theravada Buddhism and LaVeyan Satanism all meet up...and no, I don't have to 'choose a single path' because I have already done that. :)

My core tenets to my belief are based upon Advaita Vedanta (hence my Religion) and I worship Lord Shiva and Devi (and/or both together). =)

So, I live on the very 'edge of Hinduism' and my views wouldn't be accepted by the majority.

....I only post...I only chant:

Om Namah Shivay.

The amount of gods in Hinduism causes me a lot of confusion. I'm having a lot of troubles making out who is more important versus not.
Unlike the god(S) of the west, Hindu gods don't seem to have control over time. Just like all of us they are also time bound. The importance of one God is depends upon his actions at the particular time. Vishnu has done more things in this world than any other god. So naturally he has given more importance. Indra's importance has receded over time due to the emergence of more powerful god like Vishnu and Shiva. That is evident from the scriptures.

It is true that now the Vedic Gods are not popular nor worshipped as often anymore as they used to be. However, the Indra that you referred to as "arrogant", a "coward", and a "dictator" is the Puranic Indra. He is not the same as the Rig Vedic Shri Indra. Not one bit. Oh, and for the record: the Rig Vedic Shri Indra is a Hindu God. This is a fact. Keep that Nazi pseudo-BS out of the HinduDIR, please.

:sorry1: Look, I have deleted that part.
