Good "Islam = Religion of Peace" Debate

Let's go deep! :) What do you see as the difference between being peaceful and being pacifist? Probably worth also defining what you mean by 'harm' above too.

Whatever draws us away from God is harmful to us.

True peace is obtained only by obeying the commandments of God in His Holy Book.

In His Holy Book it clearly says we are to be peaceful but not pacifist. If we are attacked, our women raped, our homes destroyed then we must protect ourselves.

Did I leave something out? My apologies.

I'm interested most of all in your response to this:

But how many religions really put the unity of the human race and fostering the spirit of love and fellowship amongst men centre-stage? Not that many, I'd say. That may be an aspect of some religions, but I'm not sure it's their fundamental purpose. Worship of God, Goddess, gods, goddesses is often a more prominent theme. Or seeking knowledge. Or detachment from the world. Or avoiding sin.

If you looks closely at a post containing a quote in it from another user, you'll notice a small 'up' arrow. Click that and it takes you to the post being quoted.

First thanks. Much appreciated.

Next, I'm using an iPad. I answered someone's question but now they have asked me for further clarification and they don't quote my post in the request for clarification so is there a trick I can find the post apart from manually? I don't see any arrow.

Thank you very much for your patience.

Religion has many purposes but the fundamental purpose of religion we are told is for man to know and worship God.

In our religion it says this clearly in one of our obligatory prayers.

"I bear witness O my God that thou hast created me to know Thee and to worship Thee.....

Yes religion should cause peace and love and unity but the purpose of our lives and religion is as above 'to know and to worship God' but there are many deeper meanings to that. It also implies living how God wants us to live not just prayer and fasting. We must obey God too not just pray.

And for that matter any other "irreligion" like the Atheism behaved under Communism in Russia. Right? Please
But Islam has been peaceful all along, only those "Extremist" are violent who don't follow teachings of Islam/Quran/Muhammad and do politics under the name of Islam, they are not true representatives of Islam/Quran/Muhammad, never.

One may like to read post #25 in another thread which is very much related to this thread also.

Da man, when I walk thru!
I can pretty much take any religion and make it seem peaceful or war like, with its own scripture more often than not.

You could always ask them what post they meant or try and read from the context what post they might mean.

We believe all the major religions teach love and goodness but their followers do not always obey them.

I would generally agree with this. I try to convince people of this all the time, but to no avail.

I remember 40 years ago when we had our first interfaith as Baha'is. Interfaith was unknown then. Google it now and see how it's happening all over the world.

People are embracing their oneness and equality but it takes time.
